Wantirna Estate, founded by Reg Egan in 1963 at Wantirna South on the western edge of the Yarra Valley, makes the Hannah as its rarest release. A cabernet franc and merlot blend of roughly equal parts, it is inspired by the wines of Saint-Emilion, and Chateau Cheval Blanc in particular. The fruit comes from the estate's mature Yarra Valley plantings, farmed on a small, meticulous scale. First made from the 1999 harvest, only a single barrel is produced each year – around 288 bottles – with the 2023 continuing the elegant, perfumed, cabernet-franc-led house style.

The cabernet franc and merlot were fermented to capture the franc's fragrance and the merlot's mulberry-fruited softness, then blended at around fifty-fifty and matured in a single new French barrique from the Burgundian cooperage of Dargaud & Jaegle for about eleven months. The wine was then bottle-aged for a further period before release. The result is discreet and firmly structured, with black cherry, licorice, iodine and gentle earthiness on a well-balanced, persistent finish built to unfurl over a decade or more.
