William Downie is a leading Gippsland Pinot Noir specialist in Victoria. The Camp Hill vineyard was planted in 1998 at around 250 metres, on what is considered the highest point between the Strzelecki and Great Dividing Ranges, with almost 360-degree views over the Baw Baw Shire. The north-facing site is planted mostly to MV6 with a couple of rows of clone 115. Its red volcanic soils carry a little more rock than the nearby Bull Swamp, which tends to give a finer, more delicate wine. The 2024 release is deeper and richer than some past vintages while keeping the site's ethereal, light character.

Consistent with Downie's whole-bunch, minimal-intervention method, hand-picked fruit was fermented with a substantial portion of whole clusters and wild yeast in open vessels, worked gently to protect aromatics and build fine, savoury tannin. After time on skins the wine was pressed and aged in French oak, mostly seasoned barrels, to preserve transparency to site. Despite its weight and texture on the palate, the finished Pinot Noir stays light and ethereal aromatically, with power, great length and fine tannin.
