Tasting Notes

A wine made to be drunk young, 50% Pinot Noir from vines planted in 1981 and 50% Shiraz from the Waterloo block planted in 1995. Fermented separately, the Pinot Noir with whole berry and the Shiraz with whole bunch. each spending 9 months in French oak barriques before blending.

There is an exotic floral fragrance coupled by an expansive fruitful palate and a fine tannin framework. Highly aromatic with a blue violet lift and summer pudding of mixed berry fruits. The palate has a light touch yet is soft and fruitful, a faintest smoky grip from the use of stalks bringing some structure and drive to the finish. These varieties complement each other beautifully with the perfume, silk and spice of the Pinot sitting comfortably with the underlying structure of the cool climate Shiraz.

Critic Scores

This is 60/40% pinot (whole-berry ferment)/shiraz (100% whole bunches) blended prior to bottling. A vibrant crimson purple. Uber aromatic with its aromas of bright red fruits, musk and floral notes. Loads of flavour and a touch of grip on the delicious, medium-bodied and impeccably balanced palate. Approachable now but no problems cellaring this either over the next 3–5 years.

Vineyard Cultivation

Yarra Yering was established in 1969 by Dr Bailey Carrodus at Coldstream, in the heart of the Yarra Valley, and remains one of the region's benchmark estates. The Light Dry Red draws on estate-grown Pinot Noir and Shiraz from dry-grown vineyards set on grey loam over clay, farmed at low yields with careful hand tending. Conceived as an early-drinking wine, it aims for perfume and freshness rather than weight. The 2024 season in the Yarra Valley was relatively moderate, with an even ripening period that favoured bright red fruit and retained natural acidity, giving the fragrant, lifted material this lighter blend is built around.

Vinification

The blend is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Shiraz. The Pinot component is fermented as whole berries to preserve primary fruit and suppleness, while the Shiraz is worked with 100% whole bunches, drawing structure and spice from the stalks. The two parcels are vinified separately, matured in French oak barriques and then blended prior to bottling. Gentle handling throughout keeps tannins fine and the mouthfeel light, producing a vibrant, medium-bodied red with a touch of savoury grip. The result is aromatic and approachable on release, with the balance to reward three to five years in the cellar.
