Tasting Notes

Yeringberg Chardonnay is a single vineyard wine made from vines planted in 1974 & 1981. A low yielding, high quality vintage producing excellent, intense wines in small quantities. Picked on March 4, bottled in Feb 2023. In exceptional condition, the handpicked grapes were carefully sorted, crushed and pressed. The juice was settled overnight in a tank, then racked to barrels. The barrels were French oak hogsheads 25% new and the remainder older. Malolactic fermentation occurred in the new barrel during the winter and spring. The wine remained on its yeast lees and was stirred weekly until July and then fortnightly until November. Our 2022 Chardonnay has that extra element of precision, power and drive that the very best seasons bring to the fore. Restrained aromas of nectarine, citrus blossom and flint evolve into richer notes of white peach, honey and roasted nuts. There’s generosity and a touch of richness within a poised, powerful and complex palate.

Critic Scores

A combination of natural and inoculated ferments, then racked to hogsheads (30% new) and with 30% mlf. A
bright green gold. Expressive, with a tangerine, lemon peel and almond-scented bouquet. A little chalkier and
more restrained on the palate than the ’22, this very nicely balanced and structured wine should age gracefully
over the next five to seven years at least. 95 points. Philip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion May 2025

Vibrant pale gold colour. Yellow peach, Manuka honey and honey butter lead the aromas in a rich-but-
restrained aesthetic. Some peanut brittle and toasted almonds emerge thereafter along with whispers of toffee

and smoke. The fruit sits above the savouriness after some air, keeping brightness. The balance of opulence
and freshness carries over to the palate – smoked honey, butter, poached yellow apple, yellow peach, almond
and praline sit within a lovely creamy texture while a fine weave of acidity pulls at the tongue keeping line and
freshness throughout. There’s seemingly endless length here, it surges through the back palate with the mix of
fruit and savouriness still intermingling. A very strong release from an icon of the Valley, balancing flavour and freshness. Drink from 2025-2032. 95 points. Tom Kline, Inside Burgundy Tasted Aug 2025

Aromas of preserved lemons, salted nuts, stone fruit, river stones and apple blossoms. The palate is medium-
bodied with focused acidity and lovely depth of flavor, finishing with a slight phenolic grip. Very pure and giving,

with underlying freshness. Classic and delicious. Drink or hold. 95 points. Ryan Montgomery,

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Yeringberg is one of the Yarra Valley's founding estates, established at Coldstream in 1863 by Swiss settler Guill de Pury and still owned and run by the de Pury family. The Chardonnay is a single-vineyard wine from estate vines planted in 1974 and 1981 on the property's red volcanic and clay loam soils. Farming is meticulous and low-yielding, the family favouring small volumes of concentrated fruit. The 2023 vintage was a cool, high-quality Yarra season that suited chardonnay, giving fine, intense wines; the grapes were hand-picked and carefully sorted at the estate, preserving the fruit purity and natural acidity that define the house's restrained style.

Vinification

The hand-picked fruit was fully crushed and destemmed with several hours of skin contact before pressing, then the juice was settled and racked to barrel. Fermentation used a combination of wild and inoculated ferments in French oak hogsheads, with new oak in the region of 21 to 30 per cent and the balance older barrels; a portion, around 30 per cent, went through malolactic fermentation to build texture while retaining line. The wine matured on its lees with periodic stirring over the following months, adding creaminess and complexity without masking the citrus and stone-fruit core. It was bottled at 12.5 per cent alcohol in a poised, age-worthy style.

About this Wine

Yeringberg

Yeringberg’s status as a pioneer of the Yarra Valley is indisputable. It was one of the first winery’s established in the region, was one of the last to stop making wine in the Yarra Valley when wine production ground to a halt in 1921 and was once again one of the first to revive its operations in 1969 when Australian-made wine came back into favour.

Third-generation winemaker, Guill de Pury, and his daughter Sandra focus on small-batch, handcrafted wines that reflect the history and charm of Yeringberg. The family celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2013 with plans to be making classic Yarra Valley wines for many more years to come.
