Critic Scores

"The nose beckons with aromas of spiced white nectarine, alpine spice, baked fennel and nori. The tense palate is nervy and reticent in its youth, but you can feel the wine is going to be ready to change to a higher gear in a few months. Saline notes on the finish temper the spices and crunchy white nectarine. It’s an exciting wine that needs time."
Gabrielle Poy - The Real Review

"Offers Yarra Valley elegance with an impressive complexity of fruit married to some stylish toasty oak. Immediately engaging, and there’s a strong temptation to open a bottle sooner rather than later. Nectarine, peach, grapefruit, lemon butter, nougat, shortbread, buttered toast, spice, some hazelnut, too, are beautifully worked together. This is svelte, sophisticated, with warm texture and fresh acidity. Yes, the structure allows for more ageing. Can you wait?"
Jeni Port - Halliday Wine Companion

"White peach, almond cream, light spiced oak, vanilla and white flower perfume, barely a whisper of struck match. White stone fruit, grapefruit, nougat, of note is the feel of the wine, firm and chalky, almost chewy in texture, white strawberries, with a bright and grainy finish of excellent length. Stylish. Classic cool Yarra from a warmer vintage."

Vineyard Cultivation

A. Rodda Wines is the label of Adrian Rodda, who established it in Beechworth in 2010 after more than a decade making Chardonnay at Oakridge in the Yarra Valley. Despite the Beechworth base, the Willow Lake bottling is single-vineyard fruit from the Willow Lake Vineyard in the Upper Yarra Valley, a cool, elevated site on grey loam over clay that consistently yields taut, structured Chardonnay - explaining the pronounced Yarra character noted by critics. The vineyard is managed for low yields and hand-picking. The 2024 Yarra vintage was regarded as a warmer but even season, producing ripe yet balanced fruit with the fine acid line the site is known for.

Vinification

Fruit is hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressed and settled before a wild-yeast fermentation in French oak barriques, with only a modest proportion new to keep oak in a supporting role. The wine is matured on lees in barrel for around ten to eleven months, with judicious lees stirring to build the chalky, textural mid-palate that marks the style. Malolactic conversion is partial, retained to preserve the wine's nervy, saline acidity rather than soften it fully. Sulphur handling is restrained and the wine is bottled with minimal fining and filtration. The result is a tightly wound, mineral Chardonnay built for medium-term ageing.
