Critic Scores

Yarra Valley chardonnay (90%) provides zest and lemon freshness while pinot noir supports with fed apple and strawberry fruit, backed by subtle toasty, honeyed complexity, good acid line and slightly candied dosage of 11g/l.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Airlie Bank is the approachable second label of Punt Road Wines, the Napoleone family estate in the Yarra Valley, Victoria. Fruit for the Cuvee comes from the cooler Yarra Valley, where deep red volcanic and grey sandy-loam soils and a long, mild ripening season suit sparkling base wines. As a Non-Vintage sparkling the blend prioritises bright natural acidity, with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir picked early to hold freshness. Parcels are drawn across seasons to give a consistent, easy-drinking house style rather than a single-year statement, in keeping with the label's role as the accessible tier alongside the estate's Punt Road range.

Vinification

The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, in roughly an 80/20 split, are pressed and fermented cool in stainless steel to keep primary citrus and stone-fruit character. The sparkle is achieved by the Charmat tank method, with the wine held on full lees in tank to build a soft, biscuity texture before bottling under pressure. It is finished at around 6 g/L, placing it in a dry brut style with a clean, crisp finish. The tank method and lees contact give gentle bready complexity while keeping the fruit-forward, immediate character intended for the label.

About this Wine

Victoria

The wine region of Victoria has the highest number of grape vines than any other state in Australia. It is home to over 600 wineries and well known regions such as Yarra valley, Heathcote, and Rutherglen. Victoria is situated in the southeastern corner of Australia where due to the location, the climate has a cool maritime influence and is known for their outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, along with producing Australia’s most famed dessert Muscat and Topaque wines.

There are a number of different terroir levels throughout the wine region of Victoria which leads to the production of different ranges of wines. In the southern region of Victoria, the vines are regulated by the cool winds of the Bass Strait. Central Victoria consists of mostly flat terrain that tends to be drier and warmer than the rest of Victoria, which results in more fruit concentrated wines. It may be surprising to note that Victoria is the third most productive wine region in Australia, seeing as it does not have as many areas suitable for viticulture, which has resulted in the cellar door culture of Victoria being concentrated with smaller, but more personal boutique wineries.
