Tasting Notes

Bannockburn Grisby Chardonnay 2025 is a refined single-vineyard Geelong Chardonnay from Bannockburn’s distinctive, close-planted and certified organic Grigsby vineyard. Established in 2007 and named for Lucas Grigsby, who has tended Bannockburn’s vineyards since 1987, this exceptional site produces Chardonnay of remarkable detail, freshness and complexity.

Elegant and finely structured, the wine balances natural acidity, mineral drive, savoury complexity and a beautifully textural palate. Persistent and layered, it captures the cool-climate character of Geelong Chardonnay while delivering the depth, balance and length associated with Bannockburn’s finest single-vineyard wines.

Founded by Stuart Hooper in 1974, Bannockburn has spent five decades crafting distinctive, age-worthy Australian wines inspired by the quality and character of great Burgundy. Family owned and deeply rooted in the Geelong wine region, the estate remains a benchmark producer of expressive, terroir-driven Chardonnay.

Vineyard Cultivation

Bannockburn Vineyards is a benchmark Geelong estate with a long Chardonnay pedigree, farming organically managed sites near Bannockburn in Victoria. The estate Chardonnay is anchored by the Olive Tree Hill Vineyard, planted in 1976 alongside the S.R.H. parcel, and the Winery Block planted in 1981, both on volcanic soils over limestone clays with an average vine age of around 35 years. The 2025 blend also draws on younger plantings, including Stuart Block (1997), the close-planted Grigsby (2007) and Kelly Lane (2016), across a clonal mix of P58 and Bernard 76, 95 and 96. Cool-climate Geelong conditions and low-vigour soils give tight, structured, mineral fruit.

Vinification

Fruit was pressed as whole bunches and fermented naturally, with wild yeast, in a mix of French hogsheads and puncheons of which about 25% were new. The wine underwent full malolactic fermentation and spent around ten months maturing on lees without stirring, building doughy, nutty richness while preserving cutting acidity. The result is a fleshy yet vivid Chardonnay with stone fruit, citrus, chalk and flint, saturating mid-palate presence and a precise, lengthy, mineral finish. Alcohol is around 13.5%. The hands-off, natural-ferment approach and restrained new oak are consistent with Bannockburn's textural, terroir-driven house style.

About this Wine

Chardonnay

A versatile white grape grown worldwide, ranging in style from lean and mineral to rich and oak-aged.

Victoria

The wine region of Victoria has the highest number of grape vines than any other state in Australia. It is home to over 600 wineries and well known regions such as Yarra valley, Heathcote, and Rutherglen. Victoria is situated in the southeastern corner of Australia where due to the location, the climate has a cool maritime influence and is known for their outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, along with producing Australia’s most famed dessert Muscat and Topaque wines.

There are a number of different terroir levels throughout the wine region of Victoria which leads to the production of different ranges of wines. In the southern region of Victoria, the vines are regulated by the cool winds of the Bass Strait. Central Victoria consists of mostly flat terrain that tends to be drier and warmer than the rest of Victoria, which results in more fruit concentrated wines. It may be surprising to note that Victoria is the third most productive wine region in Australia, seeing as it does not have as many areas suitable for viticulture, which has resulted in the cellar door culture of Victoria being concentrated with smaller, but more personal boutique wineries.
