The Discovery Series represents Bardstown Bourbon Company’s most ambitious pursuit - a platform to showcase the art of blending not as compromise, but as expression. Released in 2023, Discovery Series #9 is one of the most structurally complex in the line, marrying five straight bourbon whiskeys from Kentucky and Georgia. This is not simply a sourcing exercise - it is a study in compatibility, proportion and precision.
At the heart of the blend is a 13-year-old Kentucky bourbon (35 percent), joined by a 10-year Georgia high-rye bourbon (31 percent), 10-year and 8-year Kentucky bourbons (19 percent and 5 percent respectively), and a 6-year Georgia high-rye bourbon (10 percent). The result is a whiskey layered not just by age, but by texture, profile and regional nuance.
The nose is engaging and aromatic - spiced apple compote, butterscotch, cinnamon stick and leather-bound book. A whisper of orange oil and cigar box lingers beneath, signalling maturity without fatigue.
The palate is deep and structured. Notes of dark cherry, treacle, molasses and rye-driven spice build steadily, revealing burnt sugar, cracked grain and cocoa nib in the mid-palate. Despite the ABV, the integration is seamless, and the progression from sweet to spice to oak feels fluid and intentional.
The finish is long and articulate - a slow retreat through baking spice, dry tobacco and charred oak, with a soft return of stone fruit and caramelised nut.
