Critic Scores

Effortless, elegant and silky, this heady, opulently perfumed and deeply flavoured pinot exemplifies the cliched notion of the iron fist in the silken glove. A floral perfume of fresh black and red cherries, redcurrants and dried herbs is sweetly backed by cedar/dark chocolate oak. Steeped in flavours of dark plums and cherries, it's unctuous but tightly focused, finishing with exemplary length and persistence.

Vineyard Cultivation

Bass Phillip was founded in 1979 by Phillip Jones at Leongatha South in Gippsland, Victoria, where he set out to make Pinot Noir in the image of great Burgundy after studying producers such as Rousseau and Jayer. The Estate wine comes from the original close-planted vineyard, set at around 8,500 vines per hectare on north-easterly facing slopes of red clay loam, dry-grown and cropping at extremely low levels. Farming is low-intervention and near-organic, with the density forcing the vines to compete and concentrate. The 2006 season in South Gippsland gave ripe, deeply flavoured fruit, and the wine shows the opulent perfume and silky texture characteristic of Jones-era Estate bottlings.

Vinification

Handpicked fruit was fermented in open stainless-steel fermenters with wild yeasts and regular hand-plunging to draw out colour and flavour gently. After fermentation the wine was gravity-racked to French oak, with a high proportion of new barrels typical of the Estate wine, for an extended maturation of well over a year. Malolactic fermentation completed naturally in barrel, and the wine was bottled without fining or filtration, leaving it to build texture and complexity on its lees in classic Bass Phillip fashion.
