Less than one acre, planted since 1979, this section of the vineyard is more than 40 years old today

Highly fragrant, white linen, a twist of lemon with peachy, nectarine base notes and a hint of nougat.

A complex and elegant wine offering aromas of ripe pineapple, stone fruit, honeycomb, honeysuckle, wet hay, and warm stone while the palate is rich and creamy, with bright acidity and a salty seashell finish, the wine is full-bodied and has a long finish.

Tasting Notes

The Bass Phillip Premium Chardonnay 2021 is a biodynamic white wine from Gippsland, Australia. It is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes that were grown in the Bass Phillip Estate Vineyard. The grapes were hand-picked and then fermented in a combination of stainless steel and oak barrels. The wine was aged for 12 months in oak barrels, 70% of which were new.

The Bass Phillip Premium Chardonnay 2021 is a complex and elegant wine. It has aromas of ripe pineapple, stone fruit, honeycomb, honeysuckle, wet hay, and warm stone. The palate is rich and creamy, with bright acidity and a salty seashell finish. The wine is full-bodied and has a long finish.

This wine is best served with grilled seafood, chicken, or pork. It can also be enjoyed on its own.

Critic Scores

Both fresh and dried lemon rind unite into a lifted perfume, backed by a rich creaminess. More air brings hints of dried wheat chaff. The palate comes in with immediate roundness, ripeness and depth, set against a pithy, chalky and textured mid-palate. Serene lemon ripeness accentuates the concentration and lemon oil purity. This is rich and ripe, yet totally linear. Very well proportioned with a long lemon echo. This underwent full malolactic conversion and spent 14 months in 60% new oak which it carries exceptionally well.

Bright medium yellow colour, quite ful for its youth, the bouquet very complex and layered with buttery croissant, honey and nougat aromas, vanilla/praline in the background, all of which translate superbly to the full-bodied and powerful palate. Lemon/grapefruit and lime are all present in the delicious mix of fruit and acidity, the middle and finish high-energy and exciting, and loaded with promise. It's superb now and will only improve in the short to medium term. Outstanding chardonnay.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

The 2022 growing season at Bass Phillip reflected the winery's commitment to cool-climate precision viticulture on Gippsland's volcanic-mineral soils. Under continued biodynamic management established since 2002, low vine yields and careful monitoring ensured balanced ripeness without stress, allowing natural acidity to develop fully. Jean-Marie Fourrier's stewardship maintained the estate's philosophy of minimal intervention: no irrigation, no pesticides, and selection timing refined to two–three-day windows, resulting in Chardonnay expressive of place and vintage character.

Vinification

Premium Chardonnay grapes underwent natural fermentation in open vessels followed by gravity settling and barrel ageing in lightly toasted, extra-tight grain oak with under 20% new wood. Malolactic fermentation proceeded naturally throughout extended cellaring. No fining or filtration was applied, preserving mineral expression and developing complexity through restrained oak integration and extended lees contact.

About this Wine

Chardonnay

A versatile white grape grown worldwide, ranging in style from lean and mineral to rich and oak-aged.

Victoria

The wine region of Victoria has the highest number of grape vines than any other state in Australia. It is home to over 600 wineries and well known regions such as Yarra valley, Heathcote, and Rutherglen. Victoria is situated in the southeastern corner of Australia where due to the location, the climate has a cool maritime influence and is known for their outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, along with producing Australia’s most famed dessert Muscat and Topaque wines.

There are a number of different terroir levels throughout the wine region of Victoria which leads to the production of different ranges of wines. In the southern region of Victoria, the vines are regulated by the cool winds of the Bass Strait. Central Victoria consists of mostly flat terrain that tends to be drier and warmer than the rest of Victoria, which results in more fruit concentrated wines. It may be surprising to note that Victoria is the third most productive wine region in Australia, seeing as it does not have as many areas suitable for viticulture, which has resulted in the cellar door culture of Victoria being concentrated with smaller, but more personal boutique wineries.
