Phillip Jones only makes this wine in exceptional years, from the oldest, lowest-yielding vines on the Bass Phillip Gippsland estate.

"a barrel selection with five making the cut and all up, aged in 60% new oak for 14 months."

A rich bouquet of dark cherry intertwined with hints of wooden spices, cocoa, vanilla, and subtle sweet earthiness. The wine glides smoothly over the palate, culminating in a rounded, elegant finish.

Tasting Notes

This is one of the most collectable and iconic wines in the country. A wine of power and maddening complexity. Something that will not hit its full stride for decades to come. The biggest statement Pinot Noir from anywhere in Australia and an incredibly rare one at that. This is the full Bass Phillip experience, with all its decadent grandeur on full display. A complex wine that evolves in the glass to reveal its multi layered personality. Oak plays a significant part in a respectful way, but the quality of the fruit reveals itself with time to become a bouquet of deep black cherry with notes of wood spice, cocoa, vanilla and nascent sweet compost. A silky, fine palate, still tightly wound with great depth and length of flavour. With time the palate will mollify and the flavours lengthen to provide a delicious treat.

Critic Scores

The three BP pinots are a tier of grandness and, of course, a price differential. The Reserve is the pinnacle, a barrel selection with five making the cut and all up, aged in 60% new oak for 14 months. It’s rather magnificent. Heady aromas all florals, spice, licorice root and deep, dark cherries, kirsch, too. And yes, cedary oak and wood spices in the mix but it’s not overt as the quality of fruit takes it all in. Full bodied, ripe, plump and velvety tannins with acidity in tow. It’s a powerful wine in the riper spectrum but it holds its own. An excellent Reserve.

About this Wine

Pinot Noir

A thin-skinned red grape known for its light body, red fruit character, and sensitivity to terroir, grown around the world.

Victoria

The wine region of Victoria has the highest number of grape vines than any other state in Australia. It is home to over 600 wineries and well known regions such as Yarra valley, Heathcote, and Rutherglen. Victoria is situated in the southeastern corner of Australia where due to the location, the climate has a cool maritime influence and is known for their outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, along with producing Australia’s most famed dessert Muscat and Topaque wines.

There are a number of different terroir levels throughout the wine region of Victoria which leads to the production of different ranges of wines. In the southern region of Victoria, the vines are regulated by the cool winds of the Bass Strait. Central Victoria consists of mostly flat terrain that tends to be drier and warmer than the rest of Victoria, which results in more fruit concentrated wines. It may be surprising to note that Victoria is the third most productive wine region in Australia, seeing as it does not have as many areas suitable for viticulture, which has resulted in the cellar door culture of Victoria being concentrated with smaller, but more personal boutique wineries.
