Colore is Bibi Graetz's Gran Vin, from very old vineyards of Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino. Poor soils mixed with sand and stone create the perfect terroir for a wine that tells a lot about Tuscany and its ancient taste.

80% Sangiovese, 10% Colorino & 10% Canaiolo

Siena, Lamole and Vincigliata vineyards Over 70 years old vines. Aged for 30 months.

Tasting Notes

"Made from very old vines with a blend of 90% Sangiovese, 5% Colorino and 5% Canaiolo, this lovely red has delicate, enticing aromas of plum, vanilla, crushed mint and fragrant blue flowers. Elegantly structured with a good depth of flavor, the savory, focused palate features Marasca cherry, orange rind, mocha and licorice. It's well-balanced, with taut, polished tannins and fresh acidity. Drink 2023–2033." - 94/100, Wine Enthusiast

Critic Scores

This is the best ever with incredible depth and focus. The polished tannins display energy and balance. Everything is together. Blackberry, black cherry, mushroom and wet earth. Goes on for minutes. So approachable, but one for the cellar. Mostly from Lamole. Superb

90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo, 5% Colorino. A mild, stable vintage across Tuscany with few extreme weather incidents. Sunny and dry around harvest with cool nights and no heat spikes. Vintage started end September, finished mid October. Graetz explained that there was no green harvest, now favouring letting the vine find its own equilibrium.
Very restrained and pure on both the nose and palate, this is extremely youthful but will evolve into a fine Colore. Manages to be both soft in texture yet with plenty of structure for the long-haul. Dark, bitter-cherry notes mingle with an intriguing note of dark soy sauce, as well as violet and fresh pine on the nose. Great freshness and length on the finish. (AH)

Vineyard Cultivation

Bibi Graetz's Colore draws from vineyard parcels in Tuscany, particularly sites near Florence where Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino express terroir with brightness and transparency. The producer operates multiple properties including the family estate at Vincigliata and elevated sites at Olmo (1,475 feet) overlooking Florence. The 2018 vintage in Tuscany presented favourable conditions: warm summer and autumn days balanced by cool nights, allowing extended ripening without excessive heat stress. Graetz's philosophy prioritises moderate yields and harvest timing that achieves flavour ripeness whilst preserving natural acidity, moving away from the concentrated, heavily oaked styles that characterised earlier Tuscan super-Tuscan production.

Vinification

Colore 2018 was produced as a blend of 100% Sangiovese with Canaiolo and Colorino contribution, fermented using techniques emphasising lightness and transparency: controlled fermentation managing extraction, minimal new oak influence, and brief barrel time. Malolactic fermentation proceeded naturally. The wine underwent modest maturation allowing fruit character to remain dominant. Bottling preserved the wine's freshness, natural acidity, and aromatic expression characteristic of Graetz's deliberate departure from the heavy-extraction Tuscan convention towards wines of elegance and food compatibility.

About this Wine

Tuscany

Tuscany is the oldest wine region in Italy, with a long history dating back over 2700 years. The region is on the Western coast of Italy, stretching from the coastline of the Tyrrhenian Sea all the way to the Apennine mountains, with the majority of the region being quite hilly.

Contributing to around 6% of Italy's total wine output, Tuscany is the third most planted region, but only the eight biggest producer. Much of this can be attributed to the hilly terroir and poor soils leading to lower yields, but generally higher quality wines. The region produces far more red than white wine, and is responsible for two of the most famous Italian red wines, Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino.

Chianti was first classified in 1716, and the region of Tuscany now has 29 DOC and 7 DOCG classifications. In the 1970s 'Super Tuscan' wines emerged of supreme quality, commanding very high prices. Although they were initially produced outside the DOC or DOCG zones, most of the regions have since been classified, though some producers still opt to use the simpler and less restrictive IGT labelling.

The famous red wine Chianti is based on the the Sangiovese variety, though is most commonly blended with Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon. The blending of multiple grapes is common, even Bordeaux blends can be found. White wines produced include Vermentino, Vernaccia, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay.
