Bindi wines have garnered international acclaim and the winery's unwavering commitment to quality and their focus on producing limited quantities of exceptional wines have made Bindi Block 5 Pinot Noir a prized gem among wine connoisseurs.

Production typically varies from 125-200 dozen per vintage.

Vibrant ruby colour and enticing aromas of red cherries, wild berries, and hints of earthy spices, it immediately captivates the senses, on the palate, the wine offers a delicate balance of fruit, acidity, and silky tannins, leading to a long, refined finish that leaves a lasting impression.

Tasting Notes

The Block 8 vineyard is 3/4 of a hectare in size on a sheltered, north-west facing, and very quartz riddled site with some fertile volcanic soils. The eighth block planted at Bindi has a grandstand exposition sweeping down the mid slope. Here there are mostly 11,300 vines per hectare with a Crazy section at 22,600 vines per hectare featuring seven clones. The wines from this vineyard are compelling and delicious when young and as history has shown, going back to the 1992 Bindi Pinot Noir, the wines age exceptionally well from the beginning and drink beautifully for a long time.

The wine spends 15-17 months in French barrels of which about 50% are new. The Block 8 wine has exceptional fruit depth and earthiness and is intensely structured, very long and ageworthy.

Production typically varies from 125-200 dozen per vintage.

Critic Scores

While the ’23 and ’24 vintages of Bindi’s top wines are being released in tandem due to low yields, it’s so insightful to taste the wines together. Today, I prefer the ’23 of this over the ’24. Tomorrow, who knows? This has morphed into a wine of restraint, perhaps delicacy, yet there’s a certain power and definition, too. The tannins are refined, the palate elegant and the finish long. A delight to drink now and for quite a few years hence.

Medium-full red with a good tint of purple; the bouquet is reticent at first while soft sweet, darker cherry flavours run through the finely textured and balanced palate. The tannins are firmer than most Bindi pinots and the wine has a more blocky structure, relatively speaking. Good depth of flavour and fine balance. Seems less complex at this early stage, so more time is recommended.

Vineyard Cultivation

Bindi, at Gisborne in Victoria's Macedon Ranges, is a family estate farmed by Michael Dhillon on land his family has held since the 1950s. Block 8 is a densely planted parcel of Pinot Noir established in the mid-2000s on the property's characteristic ancient quartz-flecked clay-loam soils over buckshot gravel and Ordovician bedrock, one of Australia's cooler, higher pinot sites. Vineyards are worked with organic and low-intervention principles, dry-grown and low-yielding, with high vine density driving competition and concentration. The 2023 season was cool and low-yielding across the Macedon Ranges; Bindi released it alongside the 2024 because both crops were small, producing a wine of restraint and definition with firm, fine tannins.

Vinification

Hand-picked at modest yields, the fruit was sorted and fermented in open vessels on indigenous yeasts, with a proportion of whole bunches used in the Bindi manner to add spice and structure. Fermentation was worked gently by hand with the cool ferment extending gently to preserve perfume and build refined tannin. After pressing, the wine went to French oak barriques, a portion new, where it completed malolactic fermentation and matured on lees. Block 8 is typically held around fifteen to eighteen months in barrel before bottling with minimal fining or filtration, giving a structured, age-worthy Pinot. Precise whole-bunch and new-oak percentages for 2023 need confirmation.
