Deep ruby hue. Aromas of dark plum, spice, black olive, woody herbs, cinnamon, violets, and earth. The palate has density and weight typical of Pinot Noirs from the Home vineyard, with emerging velvet fruit flavours and a persistent bright mineral finish. This is an unfiltered wine with small amounts of sediment. Please allow the bottle to stand and settle before pouring. Decanting will allow the maximum expression of aroma and purity of fruit to emerge.

Recent wine releases from Black Estate have propelled the label to the leading group of producers in the Waipara Valley region of North Canterbury. The Black Estate Riesling, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay expressions are becoming increasing complex and detailed as the Naish family grow in their understanding of the fruit from their three vineyard sources. The ‘Spye Farm’, situated in Omihi, 8 km from the home blocks, was planted in 1999, and Black Estate has taken Riesling fruit from there since 2008 and Pinot Noir 2010. The Riesling covers 2 ha and there 2 blocks of Pinot Noir. Impressed with the fruit, the Naish family leased to purchase the 7 ha of vineyard in 2012. Due to a naming conflict, Black Estate has changed the title to the ‘Damsteep’ vineyard.
