93pts Kerin O’Keefe

Produced from Nebbiolo grown in the prized Sarmassa cru, the vineyard has been organically farmed since 2010 with manual vine work and green manure to nurture healthy soils. The wine captures the unique character of Sant’Agata fossil marl soils that define this historic Barolo site.

Brezza is a fourth generation family winery based in Barolo village with roots dating back to 1885. The estate is renowned for traditional winemaking in large Slavonian oak casks and a deep respect for the land, creating wines that express both history and place with authenticity.

Tasting Notes

This Barolo is crafted from vineyards in Barolo, Monforte d’Alba, and Novello, representing the southwestern part of the appellation. It’s a historic wine for the Brezza family—produced even before single-vineyard bottlings became common. It showcases a harmonious blend of soils and microclimates.

Made with the same care as the estate’s cru wines but with shorter maceration. Aged for two years in large Slavonian oak casks (1,500–3,000L) and one year in bottle. No new oak is used, preserving the elegance of the noble Nebbiolo grape.

Critic Scores

The straight 2021 Barolo from Brezza has lovely scents of red berry, blue flower and a whiff of eucalyptus. Polished and still quite young, the racy palate offers red cherry, strawberry and star anise before a black tea close. Taut, refined tannins provide lithe support while bright acidity keeps it well balanced. Give this time to fully develop. Drink 2029-2036. Abv: 14%

Vineyard Cultivation

Brezza, established in 1875 in La Morra, Barolo, embodies the traditional Piedmont approach to Nebbiolo cultivation and winemaking philosophy refined over nearly 150 years. The Barolo Classico draws from carefully tended vineyard parcels within the Barolo DOCG zone, planted on the region's distinctive calcareous and marly soils that define the finest terroirs. These soils—composed of limestone, clay, and siliceous material—encourage slow, steady ripening of Nebbiolo's small berries, building the variety's characteristic high natural acidity and structured phenolic framework essential to classical Barolo character. The vineyard's aspect and altitude provide optimal sun exposure and cool nighttime temperatures. The 2021 vintage was cool and moderate overall, producing wine of fresh acidity, classical elegance, and aromatic intensity—growing-season conditions ideally suited to traditional, food-friendly Barolo production.

Vinification

Traditional Barolo production follows classical Piedmont vinification method: careful destemming, fermentation in wooden vats or contemporary concrete with 20–30 days of extended maceration on skins to extract tannin, colour, and complexity whilst building aromatic development. Malolactic fermentation occurs in large oak casks (botte), allowing slow conversion of malic acid to lactic acid. The wine then ages in large, traditional wooden barrels for the DOCG-required minimum of 36–42 months (38 months for Classico designation), with periodic racking to encourage gradual softening of tannins and development of tertiary aromas without aggressive oak imprint. Bottling follows careful assessment of readiness and optimal expression.
