Tasting Notes

Octomore 16.1 is Bruichladdich’s latest declaration of peat forward precision. Known for pushing the limits of what a whisky can be, the Octomore series revels in contradiction. Massive phenolic content married to surgical balance. The 16.1 expression is no exception. Distilled from 100 percent Scottish mainland barley and peated to an enormous 101.4 PPM, it is then matured entirely in first fill bourbon casks for five years, allowing the raw elements to shine with unfiltered clarity.

On the nose, expect a rush of smoke and salt layered with toasted coconut, lemon zest, vanilla pod, and singed herbs. The palate is powerful yet precise, offering grilled citrus, malted biscuit, charred oak, white pepper, and briny sea air. The smoke never overwhelms. Instead, it weaves through the profile like a live wire, energising everything it touches.

The finish is long, warming, and resonant with sweet smoke, warm spice, and a touch of iodine.

Octomore 16.1 is not for the timid. It is a dram of clarity and force, designed for those who appreciate intensity delivered with finesse. A statement whisky from a distillery that refuses to play by the rules and a must have for peat aficionados and collectors alike.

Distillation & Provenance

Crafted only for our premium spirits

Distillation

Octomore 16.1 is distilled from 100% Scottish Mainland Concerto barley, malted to 101.4 parts per million phenol — among the highest peat levels of any commercial whisky. Despite this extraordinary peating, the 16.1 is crafted for delicacy: matured for five years entirely in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, which lend vanilla and caramel notes that frame rather than mask the intense smoke. The five-year age statement belies the depth achieved through cask strength bottling. Released at 59.3% ABV, non-chill-filtered, at natural colour, as part of the Octomore Series 16 annual release from Bruichladdich Distillery, Islay.

Provenance

Bruichladdich Distillery is located on the western coast of Islay, Scotland, established in 1881 and revived in 2001 after a period of closure. The distillery is owned by Rémy Cointreau (acquired 2012) and operates under its 'Progressive Hebridean Distillers' identity with a commitment to Islay barley and terroir-driven production. Octomore is Bruichladdich's super-heavily peated range — the most heavily peated whisky series in the world. Each annual series explores extreme peat levels alongside premium cask maturation, released in three editions: the '.1' from Scottish Mainland barley; the '.2' using experimental cask combinations; and the '.3' from Islay-grown barley grown on the historic Octomore Farm directly above the distillery.
