Tasting Notes
Bruichladdich Port Charlotte 18 Year Old 2025 Edition is a beautifully mature expression of the distillery’s heavily peated Islay style, bringing together almost two decades of maturation with Port Charlotte’s unmistakable dry, earthy smoke. Limited to just 8,000 bottles worldwide and bottled at 51.5% ABV, it offers a remarkably refined interpretation of the powerful 40PPM spirit.
Distilled in 2005 from 100% Scottish mainland barley, the whisky was conceived, distilled, matured and bottled entirely on Islay. Its complex maturation combines 53% first-fill bourbon casks with 31% second-fill sherry casks, while the remaining 16% followed a more intricate journey – spending 11 years in sherry casks, around five years in virgin French oak and a final period in second-fill bourbon barrels before the components were married for bottling.
The result is wonderfully layered. Honey, toasted hazelnut and salted caramel sit alongside mature peat smoke, with the years in oak softening Port Charlotte’s characteristic intensity without diminishing it. Rich malt, vanilla and orchard fruit develop alongside darker dried fruit and warming spice from the sherry casks, while the French oak contributes further structure, depth and gentle wood spice. Throughout, the smoke remains beautifully integrated – dry, earthy and persistent rather than dominant.
At 51.5%, the palate carries impressive concentration and texture, balancing sweetness and smoke with a distinctly maritime character. Salted caramel and honeyed malt give way to roasted nuts, oak spice and smouldering peat, while a subtle mineral and saline quality provides freshness and a strong sense of its Islay maturation.
The finish is long, warming and complex, with lingering peat embers, sea salt, toasted oak, hazelnut and gentle sweetness slowly fading into a dry mineral note.
Port Charlotte 18 Year Old is ultimately a whisky about place. Every stage of its life, from distillation through almost two decades of maturation to bottling, took place on Islay. Mature, powerful and exceptionally composed, it shows how beautifully Port Charlotte’s heavily peated spirit can evolve with age, retaining its unmistakable Islay character while gaining remarkable elegance and complexity.
