Vineyard Cultivation

Bruno Giacosa's Barbera d'Alba Falletto vineyard occupies the heart of the Alba region within the Langhe hills of Piedmont. The soils are rich in calcareous clay and limestone, characteristic of this prestigious terroir, which imparts mineral structure and natural acidity to the Barbera grape. The estate was founded in the 1960s by Bruno Giacosa and is now managed by his family, maintaining the commitment to quality viticulture established decades ago. The winery employs traditional, hands-on vineyard management with selective harvesting and careful yield management. The 2023 growing season provided temperate conditions with ample summer warmth balanced by autumn cooling, allowing Barbera to achieve excellent phenolic ripeness whilst retaining the natural acidity and freshness central to the wine's style and food compatibility.

Vinification

Bruno Giacosa's Barbera is harvested by hand, sorted, and destemmed before fermentation in concrete-lined vessels, where indigenous yeasts conduct a steady fermentation over 10–14 days. The cap is traditionally foot-treaded during this period to extract colour, tannin, and complexity from the skins. Following primary fermentation, the wine undergoes malolactic conversion in large, neutral oak casks—a signature element of the house style since the 1970s that allows gradual complexity development without oak flavour dominance. The wine remains in these traditional oak vessels for 12–18 months before bottling with minimal filtration. This approach preserves the wine's natural structure, clarity of regional character, and food-friendly acidity that define classic Barbera d'Alba.
