A young wine that builds on the palate with plums, spices, cedar and hints of chocolate. Turns to hazelnuts. Full to medium body, but this builds on the palate. Juicy and chewy with caressing tannins. Love the way it grows on the palate.

The 2012 Barolo Falletto is a bit timid to open and needs extra time in the glass (especially when tasted this young). This wine was bottled in March. The wine already shows impressive complexity and depth with drying mineral notes that frame a pretty core of cherry and blackberry fruit. Background notes of light spice and grilled herb complete this pretty picture. What stands out most here, however, is the tight textural fabric of this wine. It is poised for very good aging potential.

Vineyard Cultivation

Bruno Giacosa's Barolo vineyard in Falletto occupies south-facing slopes within the Barolo zone, planted on the distinctive reddish clay and limestone soils characteristic of this revered appellation. These soils contribute significantly to the wine's structure, aging potential, and ability to express power balanced with elegance. The vineyard was established when Bruno began operations in the 1960s and remains a cornerstone of the portfolio, farmed with traditional methods and careful yield management to achieve optimal fruit quality. The 2012 growing season in Piedmont presented challenges, including spring frost risk and uneven flowering in April, yet those parcels that successfully set fruit achieved good ripeness by autumn. The resulting grapes produced Barolos of moderate alcohol and powerful, fine-grained tannin structure ideal for extended cellaring and decades of aging.

Vinification

Hand-harvested Nebbiolo undergoes fermentation in concrete tanks with the traditional technique of daily punching-down over 20–25 days, extracting colour and tannin complexity whilst managing fermentation temperature naturally. Following primary fermentation, the wine undergoes malolactic conversion and then matures in large neutral oak casks for 30 months—a commitment that reflects Bruno Giacosa's philosophy that Barolo should be austere, structured, and age-worthy rather than immediately approachable. Bottling occurs with minimal fining and filtration to preserve the wine's tannin structure and aging potential. The finished wine typically benefits from several years of bottle age before displaying the complexity, softness, and aromatic development that characterise mature Barolo in its prime.

The knowledge, passion and wisdom that Bruno Giacosa brings to his work as producer of fine wines is the fruit of the dedication of three generations of winemakers. Bruno is a perfectionist and this becomes obvious from the meticulousness with which he applies his craft specialising in the Nebbiolo grape and the wonderful wines it lends its hand to.

The Azienda Agricola Falletto Winery comprises twenty hectares of vineyards within the Serralunga d'Alba, La Morra and Barbaresco areas. The vine growing and wine making processes are followed through with care from beginning to end, culminating with vinification and ageing within the cellars in Neive.

The winemaking methods are traditional giving full respect of the grape’s typical characteristics.

Piedmont

Piedmont (Piemonte in Italian) is probably the finest wine region in all of Italy, and has laid claim to this since Roman times. It has a continental climate influenced by the surrounding Alps and Ligurian Apennines, and is located in the north-west of Italy, bordering both France and Switzerland.

Piedmont has only 1% of the total vineyards of Bordeaux and 15% that of Burgundy. So while a top Chateaux may produce upwards of 35,000 cases a year, leading Barolo producers will often make only 800 cases. More than half of its vineyards are registered with DOC designations and many are in the Apennine or Alpine foothills, from 300-600m above sea level. Most of the wines are produced by smaller family estates rather than larger holdings.

Piedmont has 46 different DOC and four DOCG regions, and produces the largest number of well known, world-recognized, prize-winning wines. The most famous would have to be Barolo or Barbaresco, whose power comes from the Nebbiolo grape variety. The most widely planted red variety is Barbera although Dolcetto, Muscat, Shiraz and Bonarda are also produced.

The white variety most well known is Moscato, which is often made into frizzante (bubbly) wines known as Asti. Cortese is made into the popular Gavi wines, and smaller amounts of Chardonnay and high quality Sparkling are also produced in the far north of Piedmont.
