Tasting Notes

For lovers of pure sensations Drappier have created a 100% Pinot Noir cuvée with no dosage. It contains only the wine's natural residual sugar at less than 2g per bottle. Moreover, the use of an absolute minimum of sulphur gives the wine the freedom to express itself totally - abundant finesse and freshness in this exquisite wine.

Golden colour with copper hues. Nose of freshly pressed black grapes, of red, white and citrus fruits - such complexity to this wine. Ample palate with flesh of vineyard peach and bouquet of aromatic herbs. Deliciously spicy notes in the finish. A fine tightly knit Champagne of incredible purity and detail.

Critic Scores

Vivacious wild strawberries, red apples and fragrant florals grace the nose whilst a wafer biscuit and salty pastry complexity brings depth and body. Vivid grapefruit acidity slices through the chalky mousse and permeates the nutty length.

The NV Champagne Brut Nature displays a copper/golden color and is made entirely from estate-grown organic Pinot Noir from Jurassic Kimmeridgian limestone soils. Disgorged in December 2023, it leaps from the glass with lush aromas of crushed berries, apricot, brioche, honey, and smoky wet stones. The palate is broadly structured, with a pillowing mousse and a rich, chalky texture. A powerfully built wine with the structure to gain in complexity over the coming 8-10 years, it will stand up to richer cuisines and carry through the end of a meal. Drink 2025-2035.

The burgeoning trend towards no-dosage champagne is a great one. It makes for champagnes that are fresher, tighter, racier and – often – more fun, like drinking an exciting youngster as opposed to sidling up to an old faithful. Dry and yet full of flavour, this drinks beautifully now and will keep the heart racing for a few years yet.

This dry Champagne forms a good contrast with the Brut Nature Rosé from the same producer. There is more weight to this wine, more richness and, in the case of this bottling, more bottle age. With its flavors of white fruit and toast, this wine is very ready to drink, with a rich aftertaste.

Black currant and cherry fruit is ripe and aromatic on the nose and palate of this fresh and harmonious Champagne. The airy mousse carries flavors of pastry dough, toasted almond, chalky mineral and ground anise. Drink now through 2018.

About this Wine

Pinot Noir

A thin-skinned red grape known for its light body, red fruit character, and sensitivity to terroir, grown around the world.

Champagne

Champagne is a wine region to the north-east of Paris where wine has been grown since the Romans first planted in the 5th century and the region is most well known for the sparkling wine that goes by the regions name.

Champagne is made from 3 grapes. The two red grapes Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier and the white grape Chardonnay. All three are commonly blended though a ‘blanc de blanc’ meaning ‘white from white’ indicates that only Chardonnay was used. Conversely a ‘blanc de noir’ or ‘white from black’ indicates that the two red grapes were used.
A common misconception is that Champagne was invented by Dom Pérignon. Although this is not the case, he made considerable contributions to the quality and production methods used in the region. The very first bottles of Champagne were created by accident, and coined ‘the devil’s wine’ for all the popping corks. Sparkling wine in Australia was referred to as Champagne but this practise has long been disallowed.

Methode Champenoise is the traditional method by which Champagne is produced and if you see Millisime on a bottle, it represents the fact that the wine comes from a particular vintage rather than being blended, which is the more common practice.

Icons such as Dom Pérignon and Kristal are world reknowned, but we find as much pleasure in the smaller Champagne houses such as Gosset and Jacquinot. Magnums are perfect for the festive occasions and half bottles are also available.
