Tasting Notes

Chappellet Signature Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 is the flagship wine from one of Napa Valley’s pioneering estates, offering a distinguished expression of hillside-grown Cabernet Sauvignon and the refined character for which Chappellet is renowned.

Established shortly after the repeal of Prohibition, Chappellet was the second winery founded during Napa Valley’s modern era and became the region’s 18th registered member of the Napa Valley Vintners. This remarkable heritage is reflected in a Cabernet Sauvignon that has represented the estate’s signature style for more than three decades.

The 2023 vintage showcases the depth, concentration and firm structural framework associated with Chappellet’s elevated vineyards. Layered and compelling, it is defined by impressive structure, refined Napa Valley character and outstanding long-term ageing potential, making it a benchmark for the region’s age-worthy hillside Cabernet Sauvignon.

International On Demand: La Place de Bordeaux pre-arrival offer. Estimated dispatch from April 2027 onwards.

Critic Scores

Creamy, rich, deep, dark, dense and purpleblack at the core. Candlewax. Patchouli. Incense. Cedar. A little graphite. Very classical but also very poised and elegant, the oak beautifully integrated and the texture on the palate so generous and supple, so soft and caressing. Very enticing. Very gracious. 97. - Colin Hay

All of the Chappellet red wines in 2023 are simply dazzling. They capture the classic hallmarks of a cool vintage—blue-fruit fireworks mingling with black fruit and spice, and a towering tannic structure built for long-term cellaring. The Pritchard Hill and Hideaway wines are standouts, and in a photo finish, this Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon serves as a true standard-bearer and benchmark for the region. It’s got everything you could want and more: blue and black fruit, graphite and iron, violets, and fragrant toasty oak spices. Over the coming years, these elements will mellow and knit together into a beautifully complex, fragrant, and flavourful wine. For now, it’s bold, ripe, and seductively pure – so alluring you’ll struggle to put the glass down. Nuances of dark roasted coffee and dark chocolate weave fine threads of character through a bed of super-fine-grained tannins. Totally captivating. - Jonathan Cristaldi

Slate and pumice tannins, cranberry, blackberry, cassis, creamy fruits with the anis, fennel character. No Merlot in the blend this year. Philipe Titus winemaker, David Frankie director, Molly Chappellet owner, still going strong at 93. - Jane Anson

Dense, powerful bouquet with menthol, cassis, blueberries, a touch of dark chocolate and tobacco. Dense and juicy, with present fine-grained sweet tannin, a firm core and fine acidity. Dense, ripe black-fruit character with plums, mulberries, anise, chocolate and dried blood orange on the finish. Good length. Excellent value for money! - Peter Moser
