Tasting Notes

The winery was founded in 1942 by Etienne Grangeon. Since 1999, it has been run by the third generation of the family, siblings Baptiste and Dominique Grangeon, and is now considered one of the top wineries in Châteauneuf. The sexy, sensual style of their wines is well-known. Even in their entry-level wines, the siblings manage to maintain this style. This is due to the exceptional quality of their Grenache grapes. A hidden gem is their incredibly concentrated Côtes-du-Rhône Vieilles Vignes. With this wine, the winery impressively demonstrates what it is capable of achieving even at lower price points. The winery has been ECOCERT-certified since the 2008 vintage.

This wine presents itself in a deep ruby red. On the nose, elegant aromas of dark berries such as blackberry and black cherry unfold, accompanied by fine notes of pepper and spice, as well as a hint of violet. On the palate, this single-varietal Syrah is balanced and precise, with juicy fruit, silky tannins, and a lovely freshness. The finish is harmonious and elegant, typical of the Northern Rhône.

About this Wine

Shiraz

Bold and full-bodied, Shiraz delivers rich dark fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, and black cherry, layered with black pepper, clove, and subtle smoke. Firm tannins and a velvety texture give it real structure, often rounded out by notes of chocolate and vanilla from oak ageing. A versatile pairing partner for grilled meats and hearty dishes, it's one of Australia's most planted red varieties

Rhone Valley

The Rhône Valley is in the South of France and is situated in the Rhône river valley. The region has been growing wines for centuries and is generally split into two sub-regions. In the Northern Rhône, Syrah is the predominant grape variety, though it is often blended with other white varieties like Marsanne, Rousanne and Viognier, or the red grape Mourvedre. In the Southern Rhône, a wide range of white, red and rosés are produced alongside the undisputed king of the Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The Northern Rhône is cooler than the Southern Rhône and has a continental climate with warm summers and cold winter. The appellations from North to South are Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Château-Grillet, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas and Saint-Péray.

In Southern Rhône, the climate is more Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot summers. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the most famous appellation but others include Côtes du Rhône, Gigondas and Lirac. Large pebbles are used in the region, placed at the base of the vines to absorb the suns heat during the day, to keep the vines warm at night.

Châteauneuf-du-Papes are blended from the 13 permitted grape varieties, though Grenache usually dominates, supported by Syrah and Mourvèdre. These wines can be supremely rich and complex and typically warrant 5-10 years in the cellar for best results.
