Tasting Notes

Clarendon Hills Onkaparinga Syrah 2013 is a distinguished South Australian red from one of Australia’s most respected cult producers. Since 1990, Clarendon Hills has earned acclaim for expressive single-vineyard wines that capture the character and terroir of each site.

This premium Australian Syrah delivers a powerful yet polished profile, with rich blackberry and ripe plum layered with dark chocolate, pepper and savoury spice. Sourced from a premium private cellar, this distinctive single-vineyard wine is a compelling expression of Clarendon Hills’ signature style and South Australian Syrah.

Critic Scores

Deeply coloured; this is a wine I can do business with; yes, of course it's definitely full-bodied, but its muscles ripple smoothly, with layers oozing blackberry, licorice and dark chocolate. The tannins oil the passage of the fruits rather than impeding them, making this dangerously drinkable.

This is an elevated site with ironstone, pebble and shale with a very attractive, deeply spicy nose, as well as grilled meat and graphite. Some white pepper, too. The fruit sits around plum, currant and blackberry and is so intense on the palate with a glossy sheen to the tannins and an elegant, fine and long finish. So fresh and focused, really striking wine. Spice and pepper to close. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Onkaparinga Syrah is perfumed and floral, with pressed rose petals, cracked pistachios, blackberry, licorice and wet stone. The palate is fine and lingering, layered as it is with silty tannins and pure, dark fruit. While the stamp of oak is evident, it isn't overwhelming, allowing the fruit to shine through both vintage and élevage. 13.8% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

About this Wine

Shiraz

Bold and full-bodied, Shiraz delivers rich dark fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, and black cherry, layered with black pepper, clove, and subtle smoke. Firm tannins and a velvety texture give it real structure, often rounded out by notes of chocolate and vanilla from oak ageing. A versatile pairing partner for grilled meats and hearty dishes, it's one of Australia's most planted red varieties

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
