Clonakilla’s Shiraz Viognier helped put Canberra District on Australia’s fine-wine map, inspired by the Côte-Rôtie tradition of co-fermenting Shiraz with Viognier. Since 1990, the Helm family has made it an Australian benchmark for cool-climate Shiraz.

Fragrant raspberry and blackberry meet violet, spice and savoury complexity, with silky tannins and bright acidity. Elegant yet generous, it’s brilliant with lamb, duck, roast chicken or slow-cooked beef.

Tasting Notes

Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier 2018 is an Australian fine-wine benchmark from the cool-climate Canberra District, a region celebrated for elegant, aromatic Shiraz. Inspired by the Côte-Rôtie tradition of co-fermenting Shiraz with Viognier, Clonakilla’s distinctive blend has helped place Canberra District on Australia’s fine-wine map since 1990.

Fragrant raspberry and blackberry aromas open into graceful layers of violet, warm spice and savoury complexity. The palate is elegant yet generous, combining vibrant acidity with silky tannins and refined cool-climate character. Shiraz provides depth and structure, while Viognier contributes aromatic lift and floral nuance.

Sourced from a premium private cellar, this sophisticated 2018 Shiraz Viognier offers excellent provenance and classic Canberra District expression. Enjoy with lamb, duck, roast chicken or slow-cooked beef.

Critic Scores

Incredibly complex aromas of baking spices, fresh red fruit and a fine and elegant, floral edge, as well as red cherries, raspberries and red plums. This is phenomenal, so precise and concentrated with such detail and power, delivered with elegance and precision. The palate is super long. The best vintage made at Clonakilla to date! Perfection! Drink now, but better from 2026. Screw cap.

Hand-picked and sorted, fermented with 28% whole bunches and 6% viognier. Apart from a hail storm in Jan, a perfect growing season. Fragrant to the point of perfumed aromas of spices, rose petals and red fruit blossom. The palate is, as ever, very complex, with spice berries sewn together in a necklace of tannins. The length is all one could wish for.

About this Wine

Shiraz Blend

A red wine blend built around Shiraz, often combined with varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon or Grenache.

New South Wales

Home to 14 official wine regions, New South Wales offers a diverse and wide ranging expanse to produce wines that appeal to every palate.
From Australia’s oldest continuous wine region – the famous Hunter Valley – to exciting new cool climate regions such as Orange, the Southern Highlands and Tumbarumba, these regions can be found to produce some of the best Australian Wine around. Recognised as the second largest wine producing state in Australia, New South Wales is also the most populous state with its wine consumption far outpacing the region's wine production. Although the Hunter Valley region is well known, the majority of wineries are located along the Murray and Darling Rivers (in the south-east of the state) which supplies water for many of the regions wineries.
Other regions within New South Wales includes the Canberra District, Cowra, Gundagai, Hastings River, Hilltops, Mudgee, New England, Perricoota, Riverina and the Shoalhaven Coast.
