Distillation & Provenance

Distillation

Comte de Lamaestre's 1967 vintage Bas-Armagnac was distilled in Lannepax from Ugni Blanc, Colombard, and Baco 22A grapes using the traditional Armagnacais column still — the continuous distillation apparatus native to the Armagnac appellation, which produces a more complex and aromatic spirit than Cognac's pot still. Following distillation in late 1967, the eaux-de-vie was filled into Gascon oak barrels and aged in the Delord cellars for several decades. The 1967 vintage shows the hallmarks of great Bas-Armagnac: sandalwood, cedary oak, crystallised citrus, dried stone fruit, and a supple, rounded palate. Bottled at 40% ABV.

Provenance

Comte de Lamaestre is a Bas-Armagnac label of the Delord house, whose distillery is located in the village of Lannepax in the Gers department of Gascony, south-west France. Maison Delord was established in 1893 by Prosper Delord, a travelling distiller who encountered the Armagnac tradition and dedicated himself to producing eaux-de-vie in the region. Lannepax sits in the heart of the Bas-Armagnac appellation — the most highly regarded of the three Armagnac sub-regions, known for its sandy boulbènes terroir and the finesse it imparts to the spirit. The Comte de Lamaestre label presents Delord's finest vintage selections.
