Tasting Notes

A tiny production Chardonnay from two masters of fermentation, Steve Flamsteed and Brad Rogers, this second Decades release shows just how special this Coal River Valley site is. The long, cool 2024 season delivered beautifully balanced fruit, and the minimalist approach in the winery lets that purity shine. Wild ferment, seasoned French oak, partial malo and gentle lees work have created a calm, mineral, quietly powerful Chardonnay with crystalline citrus, subtle texture and a sense of effortlessness. With only 200 cartons made and critics swooning, this is one of Tasmania’s must have releases.

Vineyard Cultivation

Decades is a small Tasmanian project co-founded by winemaker Steve Flamsteed and brewer Brad Rogers, sourcing from a single site at Tea Tree in the Upper Coal River Valley, north of Hobart. The Coal River Valley is a cool, dry, rain-shadowed district on sandstone- and mudstone-derived soils, giving low yields and high natural acidity well suited to Chardonnay. The 2024 is an ultra-limited release of around 200 cartons, made with a deliberately minimal, site-first approach so that the vineyard rather than winemaking artefact dominates. It shows the taut citrus core, minerality and quiet intensity the partners are chasing from the site.

Vinification

The Chardonnay was made with a wild, indigenous-yeast fermentation and matured in seasoned oak rather than new wood, following a less-is-more philosophy that keeps the fruit and site expression to the fore. Time on lees adds gentle texture and a subtle shortbread note, while the wine retains a slatey, mineral acid line and precise length. Exact pressing, oak format, lees handling and any malolactic fermentation for the 2024 are not confirmed here.

About this Wine

Chardonnay

A versatile white grape grown worldwide, ranging in style from lean and mineral to rich and oak-aged.

Tasmania

Apart from being the most southerly wine region in Australia, Tasmania has among the coolest growing subregions with the potential to make distinctly different wines than in the rest of the country.

Most well known for cool-climate varietals like Pinot noir and Chardonnay (thus sparkling too), Sauvignon Blanc smaller plantings of Riesling, Cabernet and Pinot Gris (more commonly Pinot labelled Pinot Grigio)

Historically, Tasmania can lay claim to being the founder of both the Victorian and South Australian wine industries as William Henty sailed from Launceston to Portland (in Victoria) in 1834 and planted grape cuttings there. Though not conclusively proven, it's believed that John Hack planted vines in South Australia in 1837, closely followed in 1838 by John Reynell.

Warmer vintages (possibly attributable to global warming) has had positive effects on region's industry, allowing grapes in recent vintages to achieve full phenolic ripeness, making for vibrant wines that have been widely accepted as world class.
