Tod and Debbie Dexter planted their vineyard in Merricks, Mornington Peninsula in 1987. After a jaunt to Burgundy in 2000, Tod decided he wanted something more. After helping establish the formidable reputation of Stonier wines with Brian Stonier, and a time with Mornington icon Yabby Lake, at the age of 50, his own project, Dexter wines, came to be.

Heritage vines meet modern finesse. Planted in 1992 with some of the first Bernard clones (96 & 277) in Victoria, this small Chardonnay block consistently produces fruit of stunning depth and balance. In exceptional seasons, Tod isolates a tiny parcel for separate vinification, highlighting its distinctive texture and minerality. Production is extremely limited and not guaranteed every year — a true collector’s release showcasing the evolution of Chardonnay on the Mornington Peninsula.

“Through a series of events, Tod Dexter arrived in the US with the intention of enjoying some skiing; having done that, he became an apprentice winemaker at Cakebread Cellars, a well-known Napa Valley winery. After seven years he returned to Australia and the Mornington Peninsula, and began the establishment of the vineyard in 1987, planted to Pinot Noir (4ha) and Chardonnay (3.1ha).

To keep the wolves from the door he became winemaker at Stonier, and leased his vineyard to Stonier. Having left Stonier to become Yabby Lake winemaker, and spurred on by turning 50 in 2006 (and at the urging of friends), he and wife Debbie established the Dexter label.” - James Halliday, Five Red Stars, Australian Wine Companion.
