Tasting Notes

The Domaine Alain Verset 'Signature' Cornas 2020 is a highly-regarded, full-bodied Syrah from Northern Rhône, known for its powerful yet elegant profile with dark fruit (blackberry, cassis), spice (black pepper), floral, smoky, and earthy notes, exhibiting firm tannins and bright acidity, offering immediate pleasure but promising significant aging potential, made from La Geynale vineyard with whole-bunch fermentation and minimal new oak.

Critic Scores

Made entirely from lieu-dit La Geynale this year. Clean, fresh and pure, with dark chocolate and cassis. Has the great searing crystalline power of the site, with a salty acidity. Full of life and energy, with fine but gently serrated tannins. Not hugely concentrated or weighty, but it really attacks the palate with thrilling impact. Whole-bunch fermented, matured in barriques and demi-muids of between three and eight previous uses. This cuvée is a selection of their best barrels. (MW)

Vineyard Cultivation

The 'Signature' is the top cuvee of Domaine Alain Verset, the traditional Cornas estate now run by Emmanuelle Verset as Domaine A. & E. Verset. In 2020 it was drawn entirely from the celebrated lieu-dit La Geynale, one of Cornas's finest sites, where old syrah vines grow on steep, terraced decomposed-granite slopes farmed regeneratively. The site gives searing, crystalline power, salty acidity and a distinctive mineral intensity. The 2020 season produced ripe, structured fruit, and this bottling is a selection of the estate's best barrels, expressing the pure, energetic character of La Geynale rather than sheer weight or concentration.

Vinification

The 2020 Signature was whole-bunch fermented, in the classic northern Rhone manner, and matured in barriques and demi-muids of between three and eight previous uses, so no new oak intrudes on the fruit. The cuvee is a selection of the domaine's best barrels, chosen for the purity, tension and crystalline power of the La Geynale site. The wine shows dark chocolate and cassis, salty acidity and fine, gently serrated tannins, attacking the palate with thrilling impact rather than relying on density. Bottled around 13.5% alcohol, it is built for long ageing.

About this Wine

Rhone Valley

The Rhône Valley is in the South of France and is situated in the Rhône river valley. The region has been growing wines for centuries and is generally split into two sub-regions. In the Northern Rhône, Syrah is the predominant grape variety, though it is often blended with other white varieties like Marsanne, Rousanne and Viognier, or the red grape Mourvedre. In the Southern Rhône, a wide range of white, red and rosés are produced alongside the undisputed king of the Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The Northern Rhône is cooler than the Southern Rhône and has a continental climate with warm summers and cold winter. The appellations from North to South are Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Château-Grillet, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas and Saint-Péray.

In Southern Rhône, the climate is more Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot summers. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the most famous appellation but others include Côtes du Rhône, Gigondas and Lirac. Large pebbles are used in the region, placed at the base of the vines to absorb the suns heat during the day, to keep the vines warm at night.

Châteauneuf-du-Papes are blended from the 13 permitted grape varieties, though Grenache usually dominates, supported by Syrah and Mourvèdre. These wines can be supremely rich and complex and typically warrant 5-10 years in the cellar for best results.
