Léa and Pierre Lafon are now leading the iconic domaine, with Dominique Lafon still offering guidance. This vintage marks a confident and seamless generational handover.

This vintage shows remarkable clarity and balance, with reds in particular reaching a level not seen from the domaine in years. Ripe, expressive, and unmistakably terroir-driven.

A warm, dry season with no disease pressure and smart early picking led to clean, ripe fruit and generous yields, resulting in reds and whites of poise, depth, and energy.

Tasting Notes

Domaine Comtes Lafon’s Volnay 1er Cru ‘Santenots du Milieu’ is widely regarded as the crown jewel of the domaine’s red wine lineup, rivaling the finest Grand Crus of the Côte de Beaune in depth and ageability. Though geographically located within Meursault, the clay-heavy iron soils of the Santenots du Milieu climat are legally classified to produce Volnay, yielding Pinot Noir that seamlessly marries Volnay’s classic floral finesse with Meursault’s characteristic richness and power. Farmed biodynamically, this cuvée represents one of the most complete and regal expressions of red Burgundy in the southern Côte d'Or.

The 2023 vintage showcases the domaine’s brilliant modern era under Léa and Pierre Lafon, delivering an intoxicating aromatic profile of black cherry, wild blackberry, crushed violets, and subtle underbrush. On the palate, it is full, layered, and muscular yet remarkably silky, anchored by rich fruit and fine, chalky tannins that provide immense structure without feeling heavy. Exceptionally long and refined on the finish, this is a benchmark 2023 red Burgundian built for the long haul, best cellared until around 2030 and enjoyed through 2045+.

Critic Scores

Lafon's Santenots is a reference for the appellation in each vintage; 2023 is no exception. It offers a ripe, forward blackberry and blueberry fruit
character with earth, smoke and spice notes. The texture is substantial, with firm tannins and abundant extract, but there is nothing heavy or astringent
here. Although Pierre Lafon has begun to experiment with whole clusters in the ferment, there was none in any wine this vintage. This wine was racked
after harvest 2024 and will be bottled in the spring.

The 2023 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu has another very delineated, quite floral bouquet that is cut from a similar cloth to the Champans, with just a
touch of violet emerging with time in the glass. More powerful than the other Volnays, the palate is well balanced, with great depth and white
pepper/graphite notes toward the very persistent finish. This is a Volnay Santenots with well-placed ambition, much more elegant than vintages 10 or
20 years ago.

Not racked. A fine ruby to purple colour, not too intense, but the bouquet is. A little blood orange alongside strawberry and more. At the start of
ripeness yet needed picking, there is a lactic oak from the barrel, but I like the way the fruit keeps returning in waves. More energy and fresher fruit in a
second barrel, and certainly very persistent.
