Tasting Notes

Domaine de La Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin 2023 is a remarkable expression of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, crafted exclusively from 100% Grenache grapes sourced from vines planted in 1912. This single-vineyard wine hails from the prestigious Chaupin parcel, a site renowned for its exceptional terroir that imparts depth, complexity, and elegance to every bottle.

Distinguished by its rich history and meticulous cultivation, the Chaupin vineyard benefits from a combination of sandy soils and well-draining galets roulés (large round stones), which retain heat and enhance the ripening process. The 2023 vintage captures the essence of this terroir with vibrant fruit intensity, balanced structure, and refined tannins, showcasing the unique character that defines Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds.

Critically acclaimed, this cuvée received a prestigious 99-point rating from Jeb Dunnuck, underscoring its outstanding quality and craftsmanship. The wine offers a captivating bouquet of ripe red berries, subtle spice notes, and floral nuances, complemented by a full-bodied palate that delivers layers of dark cherry, plum, and hints of leather. The finish is long and sophisticated, making it a superb choice for collectors and enthusiasts seeking a nuanced and age-worthy Grenache from one of southern France's most celebrated appellations.

Perfectly embodying the tradition and excellence of Domaine de La Janasse, this 2023 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin is a testament to the power of old-vine Grenache and expert winemaking. Its combination of historical significance, terroir-driven complexity, and critical acclaim makes it a coveted addition to any premium wine collection.

Critic Scores

All Grenache sourced mostly from the Chapouin lieu-dit with a splash from Janasse, the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin shows a medium ruby hue followed by a pretty, perfumed, remarkably elegant profile. It has a core of sweet red and black berry fruits, absolutely heavenly Provençal aromatics of herbes de Provence, black olive, pepper, and flowers, plus ripe, velvety tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. Partially destemmed and aged 12 months in 70% foudre and 30% demi-muids, this heavenly 2023 will drink beautifully over the coming two decades. There are roughly 1,500 cases produced. Drink 2025-2045.

As always, a pure Grenache Noir sourced from sandy soils, the 2023 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin is a terrific effort. Mingling aromas of wild herbs, dark berries, baked mulberries and garrigue, it avoids the excesses of over-ripeness or overt spice, instead delivering a beautifully controlled expression. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and layered, it displays impressive concentration and a sense of coiled energy, its muscular core of fruit framed by a fine chassis of ripe tannins. The finish is long, delicately spiced and impressively persistent. This will reward patience, as time in bottle should bring greater harmony and finesse.

Vineyard Cultivation

Domaine de la Janasse, founded by Aimé Sabon in 1973 and now commanding over 90 hectares in Courthézon, embraces organic viticulture across distinctive terroirs of rolled pebbles, clay-limestone, and sandy soils. The Chaupin cuvée represents a specific expression of these diverse plots. The 2023 growing season featured minimal winter rainfall, beneficial May–June showers, then dry, hot summer conditions enabling generous yields (32–35 hectolitres per hectare on average). The protective Mistral wind prevented disease outbreaks affecting other regions. Harvest extended from mid-August through late October—over two months—allowing each variety to reach optimal maturity individually, from early-ripening Syrah and Cinsault through to late-ripening Grenache and Mourvèdre.

Vinification

The Chaupin cuvée embodies Domaine de la Janasse's precision-focused methodology: each plot receives individual treatment including partial destemming, gentle manual punching down, and extended macerations calibrated to extract optimal flavour and tannin structure. The extended harvest timing of 2023 enabled careful sorting and phenolic ripeness assessment. Fermentation proceeds without rushed timelines, honouring each grape variety's maturation curve. The winery's approach combines power and elegance through meticulous extraction techniques balanced against the vintage's naturally ripe fruit character.
