Tasting Notes

An incredible estate next door to the iconic Vieux Telegraphe and originally created by renowned winemaker Phillippe Cambie. The Domaine des Escondudes offers a smooth, sultry Chateauneuf with an elegant tannic structure. This elegant wine exhibits red berries notes, such as redcurrant, ripe strawberry and cherry and a spicy finish with polished and fine tannins. A great wine that you will absolutely love with roasted meat, game and cheese.

Critic Scores

All Grenache off the region's famous gales roulés, the 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape Domaine les Escondudes—which saw zero wood—boasts admirably pure, bright cherries and good color. Some black cherries and slight hints of garrigue bring additional complexity to the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is rounded yet crisp and fresh, seemingly without dilution. Long and softly tannic, this should drink well for up to a decade.

Vineyard Cultivation

Cellier des Princes, a cooperative established in 1924, represents approximately 240 growers collectively managing 150 hectares in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The Domaine Les Escondudes designation sources fruit from carefully selected parcels within the appellation, where galets roulés (smooth rounded stones) and calcareous clays dominate the surface. These stones absorb and radiate daytime heat into the night, stress-ripening grapes to optimal sugar and phenolic maturity. The 2021 vintage brought moderate temperatures and rain, favouring balanced ripeness without excessive concentration. Grapes are segregated and evaluated by ripeness level before processing, ensuring only suitable fruit enters each cuvée. The cooperative model pools expertise from multiple family-operated vineyards.

Vinification

Domaine Les Escondudes 2021 comprises Grenache as the primary varietal blended with Syrah and Mourvèdre in proportions typical of Southern Rhône tradition. After destemming and crushing, the fruit ferments in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, allowing precise temperature management whilst developing colour and aromatic complexity. Fermentation occurs over 7–10 days with regular pumping and tasting to achieve desired extraction. After malolactic conversion completes, the wine matures in cement tanks for 8–12 months prior to bottling. This approach produces an approachable, fruit-forward expression designed for consumption within 3–8 years, emphasising red fruit and herbal nuance.
