Tasting Notes

Founded by Elio Grasso in the late 1970s, Azienda Agricola Elio Grasso is located in the Piedmont region of Italy and is known for producing high-quality wines that showcase the unique terroir of the Langhe area. The estate encompasses vineyards in some of the most prestigious regions of Barolo, including Monforte d’Alba, Castiglione Falletto, and Serralunga d’Alba.

Critic Scores

This is such a gorgeous wine. The 2010 Barolo Riserva Rüncot is undeniably beautiful and profound. It's almost hard to know where to start. The wine's appearance is velvety and rich. The bouquet opens to a long playlist of distinct characteristics that immediately remind you of the Langhe. You'll recognize wild cherry with licorice, white truffle, balsam herb and toasted hazelnut. These tones are delivered with just the right intensity. The are compelling, but never overwhelming. The finish offers an exciting succession of tiny detailing. The wine moves over the palate with silky intensity, imparting mineral tones of flint and campfire ash along the way. The persistence can be counted in many long, pleasurable minutes.

Dried cherries, spices and hints of plums. Full-bodied, juicy and flavorful. Such depth combined with refinement. A beauty now.

Vineyard Cultivation

Elio Grasso, a traditional Barolo producer based in Monforte d'Alba, has maintained meticulous standards since the 1970s, focusing on single-vineyard bottlings that express Barolo's terroir complexity. Runcot is a prestigious cru within Barolo's heartland, planted on marl-limestone soils at mid-elevation, producing deeply structured Nebbiolo. The 2010 vintage, a warm year in Piedmont, yielded fully ripe fruit with concentrated tannins—ideal for Riserva production, which demands minimum five years' maturation before release. Grasso's approach emphasises low-intervention viticulture and selective harvesting to achieve optimal phenolic ripeness without overripeness.

Vinification

Ripe Nebbiolo fruit underwent traditional fermentation in open-top wooden vats, with hand-punching of the cap during a 15–20-day maceration to extract tannin complexity and colour. Post-fermentation, the wine aged for 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks (40 hectolitres and larger), allowing slow oxidative maturation characteristic of Barolo's traditional style. The extended élevage permitted natural softening of harsh tannins, developing secondary flavours of tar, rose, and leather. Minimal new oak was employed; Riserva designation dictated the extended ageing window and gentle handling throughout.

About this Wine

Nebbiolo
