Escarpment was founded in Martinborough in 1999 by Pinot Noir pioneer Larry McKenna, helping establish the Wairarapa as one of New Zealand’s great cool-climate regions. Pahi reflects the estate’s long-standing focus on expressive, site-driven Pinot.

Bright red cherry, raspberry and plum meet earthy spice, silky tannins and fresh acidity. Elegant but generous, it’s a versatile choice with duck, roast chicken, pork or mushroom dishes.

Tasting Notes

Escarpment Vineyards Pahi Pinot Noir 2015 captures the elegance, purity and distinctive character of Martinborough Pinot Noir. Founded in 1999 by New Zealand Pinot Noir pioneer Larry McKenna, Escarpment Vineyards has helped establish the Wairarapa as one of New Zealand’s leading cool-climate wine regions. Pahi reflects the estate’s long-standing commitment to expressive, site-driven red wine.

Bright aromas of red cherry, raspberry and ripe plum lead to a refined palate layered with earthy spice and subtle savoury complexity. Silky tannins and fresh acidity provide balance and structure, while the generous fruit profile creates an elegant, food-friendly expression of premium New Zealand Pinot Noir. The 2015 vintage offers graceful maturity and impressive versatility.

Enjoy this premium Martinborough red wine with duck, roast chicken, pork, mushroom dishes or gently spiced cuisine. Sourced from a premium private cellar.

Critic Scores

The final Escarpment Pahi due to vineyard ownership changes, this offers an intense expression on the nose with iodine, tarry elements, bracken, graphite, darker cherries and biscuity spices. The palate unfurls at a smooth and even pace, delivering a ball of supple red cherry-flavoured pinot noir fruit flesh and silky, sweeping waves of tannins. Always good to go out on a high, this is superb. Drink now. Screw cap.

Deeply scented pinot noir with ripe plum, dark cherry and spicy oak flavours. Concentrated, dense and approachable but with obvious cellaring potential. Very defined fruit flavours - a textbook example of the variety that is somehow amplified by a subtle influence of spicy French oak.

Deep red colour with good purple tints. The bouquet is shy and quite oaky, with toasty and nutty nuances; a smoky charred-stave note. The palate is lush and sweetly-fruited, intense and concentrated. The tannins and oak are not as domineering as in some of the Escarpment wines. Still, there is density and muscle and the wine seems to have long-term ageing potential
