Tasting Notes

Four Roses Small Batch
A Well-Dressed Southern Charmer with a Spicy Glint

The magic of Four Roses lies in its blending DNA. Two mashbills, five proprietary yeast strains, and ten unique recipes to play with. Small Batch is drawn from just four of those - notably including both high-rye and low-rye variants - allowing the distillers to build contrast and cohesion with remarkable finesse.

The nose is generous and refined: toffee apple, red berry compote, and vanilla bean swirl above a backbone of light cinnamon and fresh oak shavings. Beneath that, there's a subtle floral undercurrent - rose petal, yes, but also something herbaceous: mint, perhaps, or dried thyme.

On the palate, it enters with confidence. The sweetness of brown sugar and baked peach is quickly followed by the tingle of clove, cracked black pepper, and charred oak. The mouthfeel is full but never cloying - silky, with a rye-driven liveliness that keeps things lifted. Mid-palate, you'll catch hints of caramel brittle, gingerbread, and a dash of orange peel - layers that unfold rather than shout.

The finish is medium to long, dry and rewarding: spice box, dry vanilla, and a whisper of cherry wood smoke. It exits with a tidy snap of oak tannin, leaving the tongue tingling and the glass quickly refilled.

Precision Without Pretence
What makes Four Roses Small Batch so enduringly likeable is how it never overreaches. It's thoughtfully constructed but never clinical. Flavourful, but not fatiguing. It invites neat sipping, rewards attention, and yet performs beautifully in a well-made cocktail - particularly a Boulevardier, where its fruit and spice sing in chorus.

This is the bottle that welcomes the curious bourbon drinker into deeper waters - structured, expressive, and utterly drinkable.

Final Thought
Four Roses Small Batch is a whisky of balance and quiet complexity. It doesn't rely on age statements or cask gimmicks - just great blending, clean maturation, and a masterful hand.

It's not just a middle-child bourbon.
It's the beating heart of the Four Roses family - polished, poised, and full of soul.

Distillation

Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon is a hand-crafted blend of four of the distillery's ten distinct bourbon recipes — specifically the OBSV, OBSK, OESV, and OESK expressions, combining the two mash bills with four of the five proprietary yeast strains. The 'O' denotes the distillery, 'B' and 'E' the two mash bills, and the final letters ('V', 'K', 'S', 'Q', 'F') each denote a different yeast strain with a distinct flavour character. The Small Batch blending selects barrels aged to optimal maturity in the distillery's single-storey rickhouses before batching. Bottled at 45% ABV — higher than the Yellow Label — for greater depth and complexity.

Provenance

Four Roses Distillery was founded in Lawrenceburg, Anderson County, Kentucky, in 1888 by Paul Jones Jr — who named the brand after his own romantic gesture of a corsage of four roses. The distillery's Spanish Mission-style building on the banks of Salt River has been a Kentucky landmark since the 1880s. Four Roses is now owned by Kirin Brewery Company of Japan and led by Master Distiller Brent Elliott. The distillery is unique in Kentucky for using five proprietary yeast strains in combination with two distinct mash bills to produce ten different bourbon recipes, which are then blended and bottled.
