Critic Scores

Aromas of underbrush, pine forest, woodland berries and cedar form the enticing nose. Full-bodied and savory, the structured palate delivers ripe Morello cherry, raspberry compote, star anise and cinnamon before closing on pipe tobacco notes. Tightly knit but refined tannins provide the backbone, while surprisingly fresh acidity for the hot vintage keeps it balanced.

A fair old amount of perfume here. Raspberry, rose oil, menthol and five spice. Just over medium-bodied, raspberry and red cherry, again the sweet spices, and a bit of tobacco savoury stuff, fresh too, with pumice stone tannin, and a long firm finish. Maybe not quite as fine as some of the better years, but gee it’s still keeping itself pretty tidy.

The G.D. Vajra 2017 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is packed with medium dark cherry fruit and plum. The wine also shows a savory side, with spice, hazelnut cream, licorice and lightly fragrant potting soil. This vintage sits solid on the palate, wrapping thickly over the senses, thanks to its creamy, fruit-driven consistency and well-managed tannins. These vines are high in elevation, ranging from 400 to 480 meters in altitude. Those higher elevations are key to interpreting a vintage that saw heat such as this.

Vineyard Cultivation

Bricco Delle Viole in Piedmont benefits from its high-elevation microclimate and organic terroir stewardship spanning five decades. The 2017 growing season presented a stark contrast to 2016: an exceptionally hot, dry summer with only 280 millimetres rainfall between March and October against a typical 550–600 millimetres. Despite intense heat, cool night temperatures provided essential relief and variation. This vintage stress induced early véraison and concentration in Nebbiolo fruit. Yields naturally moderated due to heat, producing thick-skinned, compact berries loaded with phenolic compounds.

Vinification

Harvest began in early September, approximately two weeks ahead of average. The concentrated berries demanded careful management to avoid overextraction. Fermentation proceeded with natural yeast activity; maceration extended sufficiently to extract the abundant tannin structure whilst maintaining acidity and freshness. Aging in large Slavonian oak for the mandated 38 months allowed tannin polymerisation and integration without additional oak flavour. The Vajra house style—emphasising transparency and fruit definition—was maintained despite the vintage's natural intensity.
