Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

The 2001 vintage marked another strong year in McLaren Vale, with sustained warmth and careful water management maintaining freshness in the fruit. Geoff Merrill's estate vineyards and select contract fruit across the region showcased the terroir's ability to produce age-worthy Shiraz with complexity and depth. The vintage benefited from a moderately warm growing season with even ripening across blocks, allowing Merrill to select premium parcels for the Reserve tier. Careful shoot positioning and canopy management ensured optimal balance between phenolic maturity and acidity preservation.

Vinification

Vintage 2001 fruit was harvested at optimum ripeness and fermented using traditional open-vessel methods with extended contact on skins to develop complexity and structure. Oak maturation lasted approximately 18 months in a combination of French and American cooperage, with regular racking and monitoring to manage oxidative development and aromas. The blending process prioritised fruit-driven character whilst building tannin structure for cellaring; judicious handling during élevage ensured the wine retained freshness and vibrancy for extended drinking potential, complexity and layered depth that will reward patient cellaring.

About this Wine

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
