Tasting Notes

Christine Vernay's Pied de Samson vineyard is grown on top of the Condrieu hill where the vines are cooled by the north wind. Vinified in large oak vats, the 2022 vintage of “Le Pied de Samson” is characterised by a pale, yellow colour, a soft, fresh nose of white fruits such as pear, apricots and peach, accompanied by floral notes and a subtle touch of citrus. On the palate, this wine has an attractive liveliness where the fruity flavours blend harmoniously with spicy minerality. An elegant, pretty Viognier wine with lots of varietal character and an abiding purity. This is a good value wine which matches wonderfully with many dishes, such as seafood, grilled fish, summer salads and fresh cheeses. It can also be enjoyed as an aperitif to benefit from its freshness and liveliness.

Vineyard Cultivation

Domaine Georges Vernay, the estate that saved Condrieu and its Viognier, also bottles Le Pied de Samson, a Viognier grown on a plot at the very top of the Condrieu hill. The vineyard sits outside the appellation boundary, so the wine is released as a varietal Viognier (IGP/vin de pays) rather than as Condrieu, but it draws on the same decomposed-granite terroir and the family's deep experience with the grape. Christine Vernay planted and tends the site, farmed in the estate's organic manner. The 2022 northern Rhone season was warm and dry, giving ripe, aromatic Viognier with generous stone-fruit character.

Vinification

The Viognier is hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed, then fermented and raised largely in older oak and neutral vessels in the manner of the estate's Condrieu, aiming for texture without heaviness. Fermentation typically runs on indigenous yeasts, and time on fine lees builds the wine's supple, peachy mid-palate while preserving freshness. Because this is a varietal Viognier from outside the appellation, it is generally made to be approachable and expressive young. Precise 2022 pressing, oak and lees details were not confirmed and should be verified.

About this Wine

Rhone Valley

The Rhône Valley is in the South of France and is situated in the Rhône river valley. The region has been growing wines for centuries and is generally split into two sub-regions. In the Northern Rhône, Syrah is the predominant grape variety, though it is often blended with other white varieties like Marsanne, Rousanne and Viognier, or the red grape Mourvedre. In the Southern Rhône, a wide range of white, red and rosés are produced alongside the undisputed king of the Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The Northern Rhône is cooler than the Southern Rhône and has a continental climate with warm summers and cold winter. The appellations from North to South are Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Château-Grillet, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas and Saint-Péray.

In Southern Rhône, the climate is more Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot summers. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the most famous appellation but others include Côtes du Rhône, Gigondas and Lirac. Large pebbles are used in the region, placed at the base of the vines to absorb the suns heat during the day, to keep the vines warm at night.

Châteauneuf-du-Papes are blended from the 13 permitted grape varieties, though Grenache usually dominates, supported by Syrah and Mourvèdre. These wines can be supremely rich and complex and typically warrant 5-10 years in the cellar for best results.
