Tasting Notes

The Terrasses de l'Empire cuvée is primarily aged in truncated conical wooden vats, on its fine lees. Only a small portion (approximately 10%) is aged in barrels for eight months. This choice of aging in vats proves particularly relevant given the recent vintages, which have often been rich and powerful in this appellation.

The nose is expressive and refined, revealing aromas of white peach, ripe apricot, and white flowers such as acacia and jasmine. Subtle notes of candied citrus peel and a touch of honey enrich the bouquet.

On the palate, the attack is ample and velvety, offering a lovely roundness. Stone fruit flavors blend harmoniously with spicy nuances and a saline minerality. The finish is long, fresh, and balanced, leaving a delicate and lingering impression.

Critic Scores

The 2023 Condrieu Les Terrasses De L'Empire is gorgeous, with grilled peach, musky orange, mineral, and floral-like aromatics and flavors. These carry to a medium to full-bodied Condrieu that's beautifully balanced, has a layered mouthfeel, and outstanding length. Drink bottles over the coming 7-8 years.

A lush, broad version, with creamed peach and apricot racing alongside heather, bitter almond and green herbs. A salty mineral vein keeps the energy high, with flickers of salted butter and smoke at the end, which shows bitter contrast.

A well-driven, composed and lively Condrieu with aromas of white peaches, apples, lemon leaves, white flowers and some wild herbs, Medium-bodied with freshness at its core. Juicy and tactile, with a delicate texture and a very long, flavorful finish. From organically grown grapes.

Vineyard Cultivation

Domaine Georges Vernay, the house that revived Condrieu and its Viognier, makes Les Terrasses de l'Empire as its more approachable, earlier-drinking Condrieu. The wine is assembled from several small parcels on the steep terraces of the appellation, from Viognier vines averaging around 35 years of age, with the estate's holdings including terraced plots around Sainte-Agathe. The classic Condrieu soils of decomposed granite (arzelle) sit over granite bedrock on these near-vertical slopes, all worked by hand, and the fruit is organically grown. The 2023 northern Rhone season was warm with useful freshness, giving ripe but balanced, aromatic Viognier.

Vinification

Grapes from the various terraced parcels are hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and fermented, then blended and raised largely in seasoned oak and neutral vessels with minimal new wood, in the estate's house style. Time on fine lees rounds the texture and builds the wine's creamed-peach, apricot and salted-butter breadth while a saline mineral vein keeps the energy high. Malolactic fermentation contributes to the layered, medium- to full-bodied mouthfeel. The aim is a balanced, expressive Condrieu with outstanding length, best enjoyed within its first several years.

About this Wine

Rhone Valley

The Rhône Valley is in the South of France and is situated in the Rhône river valley. The region has been growing wines for centuries and is generally split into two sub-regions. In the Northern Rhône, Syrah is the predominant grape variety, though it is often blended with other white varieties like Marsanne, Rousanne and Viognier, or the red grape Mourvedre. In the Southern Rhône, a wide range of white, red and rosés are produced alongside the undisputed king of the Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The Northern Rhône is cooler than the Southern Rhône and has a continental climate with warm summers and cold winter. The appellations from North to South are Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Château-Grillet, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas and Saint-Péray.

In Southern Rhône, the climate is more Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot summers. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the most famous appellation but others include Côtes du Rhône, Gigondas and Lirac. Large pebbles are used in the region, placed at the base of the vines to absorb the suns heat during the day, to keep the vines warm at night.

Châteauneuf-du-Papes are blended from the 13 permitted grape varieties, though Grenache usually dominates, supported by Syrah and Mourvèdre. These wines can be supremely rich and complex and typically warrant 5-10 years in the cellar for best results.
