Tasting Notes

Giaconda Estate Shiraz 2018 captures the cool-climate character and exceptional elegance of Beechworth, Victoria. Since the early 1980s, Giaconda has crafted benchmark Australian wines under Rick Kinzbrunner’s Burgundian-inspired, site-driven philosophy, earning an iconic reputation for refined, age-worthy Shiraz.

Rich blackberry and dark plum flavours lead into layers of pepper, spice and earthy complexity. Powerful yet never heavy, this premium Australian red wine displays beautifully integrated tannins, impressive depth and a silky, balanced finish.

Sourced from a premium private cellar, this cellar-worthy Shiraz is a distinguished choice for collectors and lovers of fine wine. Enjoy with grilled steak, roast lamb, slow-cooked beef or a generous Sunday roast.

Critic Scores

Very bright and sappy with a lot of spice and ripe red plums, as well as graphite and espresso. This is so fragrant. The palate has assertive toasted-spice and roasted-coffee flavors and a sapid texture with such layered tannins. Very focused, very rich and very complex. Try from 2024.

Another restrained beauty from Giaconda, with a seemingly modest presence until the wine hits the tongue. This is a journey into the heart of shiraz. Aromas of forest berries, pepper, sage, anise and red earth are transformed into levels of layered complexity on the palate. Spice is ever-present, so too wood smoke and leather, with understated, savoury, ripe tannins.

Deep, bright red colour with a good tint of purple and a lovely spicy bouquet, which instantly evokes the Northern Rhône. The wine is full-bodied and very intense, lushly-fruited, soft and sweet in the centre, with amplitude and supple texture so that it already drinks really well. It finishes long in the mouth and will age well. A superb shiraz.

About this Wine

Shiraz

Bold and full-bodied, Shiraz delivers rich dark fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, and black cherry, layered with black pepper, clove, and subtle smoke. Firm tannins and a velvety texture give it real structure, often rounded out by notes of chocolate and vanilla from oak ageing. A versatile pairing partner for grilled meats and hearty dishes, it's one of Australia's most planted red varieties

Victoria

The wine region of Victoria has the highest number of grape vines than any other state in Australia. It is home to over 600 wineries and well known regions such as Yarra valley, Heathcote, and Rutherglen. Victoria is situated in the southeastern corner of Australia where due to the location, the climate has a cool maritime influence and is known for their outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, along with producing Australia’s most famed dessert Muscat and Topaque wines.

There are a number of different terroir levels throughout the wine region of Victoria which leads to the production of different ranges of wines. In the southern region of Victoria, the vines are regulated by the cool winds of the Bass Strait. Central Victoria consists of mostly flat terrain that tends to be drier and warmer than the rest of Victoria, which results in more fruit concentrated wines. It may be surprising to note that Victoria is the third most productive wine region in Australia, seeing as it does not have as many areas suitable for viticulture, which has resulted in the cellar door culture of Victoria being concentrated with smaller, but more personal boutique wineries.
