Tasting Notes

Giuseppe Quintarelli Primofiore 2022 is the seductive gateway to one of Italy’s most revered estates—a wine that combines the soulful richness of the Veneto hills with the elegance of tradition and time. Translating to “first flower,” Primofiore offers a delicate yet complex expression, with Corvina and Corvinone bringing fragrant red cherry and violet, while partially dried Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc lend a darker, more brooding intensity. Aged in large Slavonian oak for over a year, it glides across the palate with silky tannins, bright acidity, and an undercurrent of spice and cedar. This is not a wine that demands attention—it earns it, slowly and persistently, with every glass.

Critic Scores

The Quintarelli Giuseppe 2022 Primofiore is a blend of 50% local grapes (Corvina Veronese and Corvinone) and 50% international grapes (Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) with fruit that has been pressed fresh and some that undergoes appassimento. However, the style of the wine is slowly moving toward a fresher and drier style, with extra measures taken to avoid residual sugar and volatile acidity. The wine is expressed with floral and herbal elements over a medium-lean texture. There are earthy sensations with iris root and dark currant that give the Primofiore an especially food-friendly personality. Drink 2024-2030.

Vineyard Cultivation

Quintarelli farms hillside vineyards on the Cerè slope above Negrar in Valpolicella Classica, in the Veneto, on calcareous, limestone-rich soils worked traditionally with low yields. Primofiore, meaning 'first flower', is the estate's earliest-released red and an accessible introduction to the house style. It draws on local Corvina Veronese and Corvinone alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, roughly half local and half international grapes. The vines are hand tended, with meticulous canopy work and selective picking. The 2022 growing season in Verona was warm and dry, which favoured ripe, healthy fruit; the estate has been steering the wine toward a fresher, drier profile, taking extra measures in the vineyard and cellar to avoid residual sugar and volatile acidity.

Vinification

A portion of the fruit is pressed fresh while a further portion undergoes a short appassimento, air-drying to concentrate flavour before fermentation. The components are fermented and then raised in large Slavonian oak botti for roughly twelve to eighteen months, softening tannins and integrating the local and Bordeaux grapes. In keeping with the estate's move toward precision, extra care is taken to keep the wine dry and clean, minimising residual sugar and volatile acidity. The result is medium-bodied and food-friendly, with floral and herbal lift, iris and dark-currant notes, and silky tannins. Ageing is unhurried and low-intervention throughout.
