Giuseppe Quintarelli is considered to be quite simply a legend of Italian viticulture, notably of Amarone, a globally-renowned Venetian wine.

The viticulture at the domain is traditional, inspired by ancestral practices. The vines are treated only when necessary (when it rains, for example), and no herbicides are used.

Critic Scores

The 2012 Valpolicella Classico Superiore opens up with dusty dried flowers, black cherries and exotic spices. It gains volume and richness the longer it sits in the glass. Its textures are silky, coasting along a medium-bodied frame with mineral-tinged red fruits energized by brisk acids. The 2012 becomes quite floral toward the close, and incredibly pretty as well, with hints of fine tannin under an air of geranium, violets and sweet lavender. I expect this will flesh out a bit more and excel with another year or two of cellaring. It was made from half fresh-harvested and half air-dried fruit which is matured for six years in cask prior to release. Primarily, the blend is all traditional Venetian red grapes, but it also contains a small amount of other indigenous Italian varieties. Very nice.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

The Valpolicella Classico Superiore is sourced from mature vines planted on volcanic and limestone soils in the foothills of the Lessini Mountains, within the Classico denomination boundary. The vineyard's south-facing orientation and moderate altitude create a microclimate that balances ripeness with freshness in the Corvina-based blend. The 2012 vintage was warm, with favourable growing conditions through the season that contributed to good concentration and phenolic maturity in the fruit, characteristics reflected in the resulting wine's structure.

Vinification

The wine was produced following Quintarelli's established protocols: natural fermentation in wooden vessels with extended maceration for tannin and colour extraction. Oak maturation combined larger neutral vessels with strategic use of smaller oak, allowing development of secondary aromatic complexity. The producer's consistent approach emphasises terroir expression and the characteristics of the vintage rather than oak-driven flavours. The resulting wine balances fruit intensity with the mineral finesse characteristic of well-made Valpolicella.

About this Wine

Veneto

Veneto in the north east of Italy, is the 8th largest region in Italy in terms of land mass, and over 90,000 hectares are under vine, of which some 35,000 hectares are DOC, making Veneto the largest producer of DOC wines in Italy. Venetian viticulture dates back to the Roman times, but phylloxera and world wars saw large cooperatives come to the region taking over many smaller vineyards.

The region is protected from the harsh European climate by the Alps, in the north of Veneto, though the cool climate there is ideal for producing Garganega, the main variety in the white wine Soave. To the east, along the Adriatic coast the renowned Valpolicella, Amarone and Bardolino DOC reds are produced. Reds are often blended with multiple grapes although straight varietals like Cabernet Franc can be very enjoyable.

The plains of Piave produce vast quantities of wine, rather than necessarily producing the highest quality wines and up in the Conegliano hills to the north is home to the Prosecco variety, which is growing in popularity, seen as a bargain alternative to Champagne.
