Critic Scores

Some of the vines for this wine were planted by Cyril Henschke back in the 1960s. Matured in French oak (10% new) for 18 months. Bright blackberry and blackcurrant fruits with top notes of redcurrant and red cherry. Olive tapenade, cedar, light briar notes and mountain herbs. Fine lacy acidity and tight, powdery tannin provide the frame, and there is no doubt that this release will age magnificently.

Beautiful, attractive cabernet characters with cigars, tobacco leaf, currants, savory tapenade and sweet roasted chili peppers. Cocoa powder and star anise, too. Intense, but remaining fluid with a bright, red-fruited center palate followed by a lengthy, layered finish, full of Spanish chocolate and cigar box characters. Lasting almost a minute. 2% merlot and 1% cabernet franc in the blend. 10% new French oak 300 liter barrels. Drink now or hold.

About this Wine

Cabernet Blend

A red wine blend built around Cabernet Sauvignon, often combined with varieties like Merlot or Cabernet Franc for added complexity.

Grosset

Established in 1981, Grosset Wines is independently owned and dedicated to allowing purity of fruit and region to take centre stage. “We aim to produce the best examples of variety and place. This is self-explanatory really… Riesling from the Clare Valley, expressing the dramatic differences between soft rock and hard rock sites and then differences within those broad categories; uniquely sited Semillon and Fiano, Cabernet from the coolest site in the region and of course, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from an even cooler sub-region of the Adelaide Hills,” explains owner and founder, Jeffrey Grosset.

“Purity of fruit and optimum ripeness are crucial to us, and we are not afraid to use different wine making approaches to bring the best out of each vineyard. Each is a testament to this philosophy.”

Clare Valley

Situated in the Mid North of South Australia, approximately 120 km north of Adelaide is one of Australia's oldest wine regions the Clare Valley. The area is broken up into three sub-regions, the Polish Hill River region to the east, the Central Clare Valley, and the Skillogalee Valley to the west.

Often associated with some of Australia's finest Riesling the cool climate and differing terroirs have paved the way for exciting and diverse wines over a plethora of varietals resulting in wines of pure expression and great length. Home to some of Australia's most iconic wineries - cult producers like Wendouree, to Australian icons such as Kilikanoon and boutique producers like Atlas, the Clare Valley is definitely an area to keep an eye on for exciting and ever evolving wines
