Tasting Notes

Ed Carr began his quest to craft a world‑class Australian sparkling wine in 1988 and founded House of Arras in 1995; by 1998 he decided to source all fruit from cool Tasmanian vineyards.

Today he blends grapes from up to six sub‑regions. The Brut Elite Cuvée 1801 combines about 49% Pinot Noir, 42% Chardonnay and 9% Meunier. Only free‑run juice is used, and the wine is aged on lees for four years before disgorgement with a dosage around 5.2 g/L.

Aromas of toast, citrus zest and herbs lead to a palate layered with spice, lemon and savoury autolysis; fine acidity and a persistent finish underscore its maturity.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

House of Arras is Tasmania's most awarded sparkling house, sourcing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the island's cool northern and southern valleys for traditional-method wine. The Brut Elite Cuvee 1801 is the house's non-vintage flagship blend, drawing on multiple premium Tasmanian sites on clay- and basalt-based soils where slow, cool ripening builds high natural acidity and fine flavour. As a multi-vintage cuvee it is assembled from several seasons and, typically, reserve material to maintain a consistent house style year to year, rather than expressing a single harvest. Cool-climate fruit and careful parcel selection underpin its freshness and length.

Vinification

Made by the traditional method from a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the fruit is hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed, then fermented to a dry base wine. Selected base wines from more than one vintage are blended before tirage, and the cuvee undergoes second fermentation in bottle and matures on lees for an extended period - building the biscuity, citrus and stone-fruit complexity and creamy mousse characteristic of Arras. After riddling and disgorgement it is finished brut with a measured dosage. The style balances autolytic richness with the taut acidity of Tasmanian fruit. Exact blend proportions, lees time and dosage NEEDS VERIFICATION.

About this Wine

Tasmania

Apart from being the most southerly wine region in Australia, Tasmania has among the coolest growing subregions with the potential to make distinctly different wines than in the rest of the country.

Most well known for cool-climate varietals like Pinot noir and Chardonnay (thus sparkling too), Sauvignon Blanc smaller plantings of Riesling, Cabernet and Pinot Gris (more commonly Pinot labelled Pinot Grigio)

Historically, Tasmania can lay claim to being the founder of both the Victorian and South Australian wine industries as William Henty sailed from Launceston to Portland (in Victoria) in 1834 and planted grape cuttings there. Though not conclusively proven, it's believed that John Hack planted vines in South Australia in 1837, closely followed in 1838 by John Reynell.

Warmer vintages (possibly attributable to global warming) has had positive effects on region's industry, allowing grapes in recent vintages to achieve full phenolic ripeness, making for vibrant wines that have been widely accepted as world class.
