Tasting Notes

Sunshine on Speyside: The Art of Understatement

Sunshine on Speyside is one of the gentlest whiskies in the Hazelwood collection, and one of the most self-assured. It doesn't aim to impress with power or rarity. Instead, it offers something more enduring: clarity, balance, and the quiet brightness that only comes from well-aged stocks blended with care.

This is Speyside through the lens of time and touch. Orchard fruit, soft grain, and sweet malt, each element composed with the precision that defines the House of Hazelwood. It doesn't chase complexity. It allows it to emerge, patiently, from within.

A Bright, Composed Profile

Drawn from the Charles Gordon Collection, Sunshine on Speyside is a whisky that embodies calm confidence. It's not here to provoke or perform. It's here to show what happens when spirit is given the room to breathe, and the time to become.

This is whisky built not on volume, but on tone. A profile that leans into light, and lands with grace.

Poise Over Power

The nose is open and immediate: apple skin, barley sugar, lemon shortbread, and meadow honey. There's a floral top note and the faintest trace of oak polish. Speyside in a bright key, warm, not loud.

On the palate, the whisky is graceful and rounded. Poached pear, white chocolate, milk tea, and almond cream unfold over a fine grain texture. Citrus oils bring lift; gentle oak provides structure. The sweetness is balanced and self-aware, always present, never insistent.

The finish is steady and clean. Saffron, vanilla pod, soft grass, and citrus peel taper gently, leaving a final note of quiet freshness.

Conclusion: Light, with Depth

In the context of the wider Hazelwood range, Sunshine on Speyside offers a moment of clarity, a reminder that whisky doesn’t need a high proof or a headline age statement to speak with depth. It needs purpose. Patience. And the humility to let the spirit speak for itself.

For those who find beauty in understatement, this is a whisky that resonates. A blend that glows, not shouts. And a perfect expression of Hazelwood's rare ability to turn simplicity into something quietly exceptional.

Distillation & Provenance

Crafted only for our premium spirits

Distillation

House of Hazelwood 'Sunshine on Speyside' is a 39-year-old Blended Malt Scotch Whisky distilled in the early 1980s from Speyside distilleries within the William Grant & Sons portfolio. A blended malt draws exclusively from malt whisky distilleries — no grain whisky component — blending the character of multiple single malts into a unified expression. After 39 years of maturation in casks in Speyside, the whisky has developed rich notes of dried orchard fruit, honeyed oak, dark spice, and rancio characteristic of very long-aged Speyside single malts. This expression forms part of the Legacy Collection of the House of Hazelwood range. Bottled at 42.5% ABV.

Provenance

House of Hazelwood is named after Hazelwood House — the Dufftown, Speyside home of the Gordon family, owners of William Grant & Sons. The range was established to release a private collection of rare and aged Scotch whiskies laid down by the Grant family — and particularly by Charles Gordon, who was instrumental in building William Grant & Sons into one of Scotland's most significant independent distilling companies — for personal use over many decades. These casks, spanning single grains and blended malts, were never intended for public sale. House of Hazelwood represents their first release to collectors and enthusiasts, offering access to rare aged Scotch of significant historical provenance.
