Tasting Notes

Long aging in French oak barrels (30 - 50 hl or 872 -1373 Gallon) followed by bottle aging.

Ruby red in colour, with a very intense, persistent nose and with red fruit notes. Warm, balanced flavour with velvet-smooth tannins. Long-lasting aroma.

Critic Scores

The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is explosive, bright and punchy at first, evolving from cranberry to cherry with dusty sage, spiced blood orange and Tuscan dust. The is pure elegance, texturally deep and nearly velvety in feel with a core of tart wild berries that add contrast as a balsamic tinge emerges along with fine-grained tannins toward the close. It finishes long, structured and staining, leaving a flinty sensation and primary core of fruit that drenches the palate as violet inner florals and hints of lavender abound. The 2020 is seamless from start to finish and, while more approachable than a typical vintage of Il Poggione, is balanced for an extended maturation.

Vineyard Cultivation

Tenuta il Poggione is located in Sant'Angelo in Colle, southern Montalcino, Tuscany, operating vineyard sites planted between 150 and 450 metres above sea level. The estate, established in the late 19th century and a founding member of the Brunello di Montalcino consorzio in 1967, draws brunello exclusively from 100% sangiovese grapes. The vineyard employs two training systems—cordon spur and doppio capovolto—with hand-harvested fruit from premium parcels. The 2020 growing season in Tuscany presented moderate ripeness and good acidity, allowing sangiovese to develop its characteristic red-fruit profile and tannin structure without excessive concentration.

Vinification

Il Poggione directed 2020 brunello through 15–20 days of submerged-cap fermentation in stainless-steel tanks at controlled temperatures (25–28°C) with indigenous yeasts. This technique preserves freshness whilst extracting colour and moderate tannins. Malolactic fermentation followed, then maturation in large French oak barrels (30–50 hectolitres), rejecting the modern trend toward small barrels. This approach, as producer Alessandro Bindocci explains, yields 'wines that are fresher and more refined.' Extended bottle age completes phenolic development before release.

About this Wine

Tuscany

Tuscany is the oldest wine region in Italy, with a long history dating back over 2700 years. The region is on the Western coast of Italy, stretching from the coastline of the Tyrrhenian Sea all the way to the Apennine mountains, with the majority of the region being quite hilly.

Contributing to around 6% of Italy's total wine output, Tuscany is the third most planted region, but only the eight biggest producer. Much of this can be attributed to the hilly terroir and poor soils leading to lower yields, but generally higher quality wines. The region produces far more red than white wine, and is responsible for two of the most famous Italian red wines, Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino.

Chianti was first classified in 1716, and the region of Tuscany now has 29 DOC and 7 DOCG classifications. In the 1970s 'Super Tuscan' wines emerged of supreme quality, commanding very high prices. Although they were initially produced outside the DOC or DOCG zones, most of the regions have since been classified, though some producers still opt to use the simpler and less restrictive IGT labelling.

The famous red wine Chianti is based on the the Sangiovese variety, though is most commonly blended with Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon. The blending of multiple grapes is common, even Bordeaux blends can be found. White wines produced include Vermentino, Vernaccia, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay.
