Tasting Notes

John Duval Wines Eligo Shiraz 2015 is a powerful and polished expression of premium Australian Shiraz, crafted from carefully selected old-vine fruit. The name Eligo, meaning “to choose,” reflects John Duval’s exacting philosophy and commitment to selecting exceptional grapes for a serious, cellar-worthy wine.

A major figure in Australian Shiraz, John Duval is renowned for his decades at Penfolds before establishing his own Barossa winery in 2002. This distinguished 2015 vintage showcases the depth and generosity associated with premium Barossa winemaking, balancing rich concentration with refined structure.

Plush blackberry and black plum flavours unfold across the palate, layered with dark chocolate, cracked pepper, warm spice and savoury complexity. Powerful yet elegant, it is supported by firm tannins, considered oak integration and a lingering finish. Enjoy now with decanting, or cellar to allow further development.

A superb match for grilled steak, slow-cooked lamb, rich barbecue dishes and a special Sunday roast, this exceptional Shiraz is sourced from a premium private cellar and makes a distinguished addition to any collection of Australian fine wine.

Critic Scores

75% Barossa Valley, 25% Eden Barossa Valley, as always, the best grapes of the vintage. Fermented with submerged cap in small open fermenters, matured for 20 months in French hogsheads (55% new). The power and intensity of this wine takes your breath away. Its dark, brooding black fruits are woven together by firm tannins that are an essential part of the wine. It's certain that 20 months in 55% new French hogsheads has also imprinted itself on the bouquet and palate, but its presence is (relatively) subtle. I would give a longer drink to date if it were under screwcap, but the cork used is high quality, and should see out 25 years.

A warm start to the vintage that then cooled down, and some rains in January freshened up the vines. This has aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants, red plums and raspberries. Freshly spicy and youthful with leafy tones, cedar and forest wood. The palate has impressively strong tannins that carry rich, ripe and long. A powerful Eligo with many years ahead. A blend of 74% Barossa Valley and 26% Eden Valley. Drink or hold.

About this Wine

Shiraz

Bold and full-bodied, Shiraz delivers rich dark fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, and black cherry, layered with black pepper, clove, and subtle smoke. Firm tannins and a velvety texture give it real structure, often rounded out by notes of chocolate and vanilla from oak ageing. A versatile pairing partner for grilled meats and hearty dishes, it's one of Australia's most planted red varieties

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
