Tasting Notes

Aromas of cherry fruit with spicy and earthy notes displaying an attractive nose. Aniseed characters complement these fragrances, making way for a dry and soft palate. The wine reveals strawberry and raspberry flavours, savoury tannins, and a wonderful finish. This rich and bold wine will reward careful cellaring.

Critic Scores

Pretty and lifted aromas of cherry, violets, pot-pourri, sarsaparilla and blueberry. The palate is bright, fresh and crunchy, with a core of red and blue fruits and spice. Tannins are texured and layered and the acidity has life and zip. A lovely, spritely grenache

Single-vineyard grenache made in the 'cab-mac' (carbonic maceration) style, matured in old, seasoned barrels. Such a pretty wine this, bright in hue with red cherry, plum and raspberry fruits cut with hints of exotic spice, wildflowers, crushed stone, raspberry coulis, wild strawberries, citrus rind, gingerbread and earth. Detailed with plenty of space, tension and verve, a minerally pulse and a real sense of savoury, purely fruited joy. Just lovely drinking.

There’s purity of fruit, clarity of acidity and gloss of tannins in this wine. It feels a bit juby/confected and maybe slightly warm as Grenache does/is sometimes, but overall it’s balanced and flowing with focus. Fruit comes pushing to the front, plump raspberry and red plum, a hint of blue fruit and peppery spice to finish, pinching the tongue in the aftertaste. It has a bit of wilderness inside, dusty twiggy notes and meatiness soothed by a sweet note of red liquorice. You can’t deny it’s an attractive drink.

Vineyard Cultivation

The Fave represents Kaesler's single-varietal expression of Grenache from the heritage Barossa vineyard system established in 1891. Grenache plantings within the estate draw from mature parcels whose age (ranging from 1950s through 1990s plantings) imparts structure and complexity beyond what younger vines deliver. The 2022 Barossa vintage provided warm, dry conditions favouring phenolic development in Grenache, whose thin skins benefit from stable, predictable ripening windows. Kaesler's dry-farming approach—minimising intervention—allowed the vineyard to express its distinctive character whilst managing yields to favour concentration. The estate's sustainability focus, including partnerships with Trees for Life for revegetation, sustains soil health that underpins the vineyard's old-vine quality.

Vinification

The Fave Grenache 2022 follows Kaesler's philosophy of bold, authentic winemaking. Hand-harvesting targeted optimal phenolic ripeness specific to Grenache's ripening curve. Open-vat fermentation employed classical techniques without temperature modulation, allowing indigenous yeast to drive the transformation. Extended post-fermentation maceration on skins developed colour, tannin, and savoury aromatics characteristic of premium Barossa Grenache. Maturation in large-format oak—primarily 2700-litre foudres and older wooden vessels—avoided the jammy oak-influence risk common to Grenache, instead allowing the vineyard's inherent elegance to emerge. The resulting wine demonstrates why Kaesler has achieved consistent 90-point ratings.

About this Wine

Kaesler

Kaesler is a Barossa Valley winery, through and through. The Kaesler family first settled on the estate in 1845 and by the mid-1890s they had planted vineyards and winemaking was in full swing. The estate was in the family’s hands until 1986, but it wasn’t until 1999, when winemaker Reid Bosworth came along, that the Kaesler wine legacy jumped back in to gear.

With a focus on old-vine Shiraz, Kaesler has made a name for itself as a Barossa Valley stalwart on the back of its Kaesler Old Bastard, The Bogan, Alte Reben and Stonehorse wines.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
