Founded in Reims in 1843 by Joseph Krug, Krug was built around a revolutionary idea: Champagne should be crafted for quality and character rather than simply reflecting a single vintage. Grande Cuvée remains the house’s signature expression of that philosophy.

Rich and layered, with citrus, ripe fruit, brioche, toasted nuts and subtle spice, carried by fine, persistent bubbles. Luxurious but wonderfully versatile, it’s superb with oysters, lobster, roast poultry or a celebratory dinner.

Tasting Notes

Krug Grande Cuvée NV is the signature Champagne of the legendary house founded in Reims in 1843 by Joseph Krug. Created as a carefully composed multi-vintage blend, it expresses Krug’s pioneering philosophy that exceptional Champagne should be defined by quality, complexity and character rather than a single harvest.

Rich, elegant and beautifully layered, this luxury Champagne opens with vibrant notes of citrus and ripe fruit, followed by enticing nuances of brioche, toasted nuts and subtle spice. Fine, persistent bubbles create a refined texture and a long, beautifully balanced finish.

Remarkably versatile, Krug Grande Cuvée pairs effortlessly with oysters, lobster, roast poultry and other refined dishes, while its depth and sophistication make it an outstanding choice for a celebratory dinner or special occasion. Sourced from a premium private cellar.

Critic Scores

A very complex nose here with ripe, deep lemon and grapefruit aromas on offer plus some restrained chalky elements, biscuit, some roasting herbs, hints of pepper, then a little tobacco too. Very complex and full of fresh characters. The palate has a wealth of different fruit flavors like lemon, peach, nectarine, and plums. The finesse in terms of structure, detail and precision is staggering; sherbet-like elegance with immense concentration and power. A great Grande Cuvée. Incredibly satisfying. Based on 2006.Krug ID 14024.

Because it’s been blended from 10 different vintages and 47 different wines from 25 crus, Krug is a super multi-vintage of its own kind. The extremely tough acidity, together with the heavy, rich Krug aromas, are unique. This bottle had a fabulously complex nose and palate, dominated by nuts and honey. The aftertaste was acidic, long and majestic, like a great symphony.

With its minimum of six years' bottle aging, this is a beautifully integrated, mature wine. It has a wonderful toast character, layered over sliced pears and ripe acidity. With its complex poise between lightness and richness, this remains an intensely impressive wine.

About this Wine

Champagne Blend

A sparkling wine blend, typically built from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, reflecting the classic grapes of the Champagne region.

Champagne

Champagne is a wine region to the north-east of Paris where wine has been grown since the Romans first planted in the 5th century and the region is most well known for the sparkling wine that goes by the regions name.

Champagne is made from 3 grapes. The two red grapes Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier and the white grape Chardonnay. All three are commonly blended though a ‘blanc de blanc’ meaning ‘white from white’ indicates that only Chardonnay was used. Conversely a ‘blanc de noir’ or ‘white from black’ indicates that the two red grapes were used.
A common misconception is that Champagne was invented by Dom Pérignon. Although this is not the case, he made considerable contributions to the quality and production methods used in the region. The very first bottles of Champagne were created by accident, and coined ‘the devil’s wine’ for all the popping corks. Sparkling wine in Australia was referred to as Champagne but this practise has long been disallowed.

Methode Champenoise is the traditional method by which Champagne is produced and if you see Millisime on a bottle, it represents the fact that the wine comes from a particular vintage rather than being blended, which is the more common practice.

Icons such as Dom Pérignon and Kristal are world reknowned, but we find as much pleasure in the smaller Champagne houses such as Gosset and Jacquinot. Magnums are perfect for the festive occasions and half bottles are also available.
