The Ornellaia 2022 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is a blend of 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc that saw 15 months in barrique with one-third new oak. Following in the general Ornellaia philosophy, the team has been leaning off long maceration times for more delicate extraction. Blending for this wine usually occurs 12 months after fermentation. This vintage is structured and rich with sweet tannins and a supple texture. This hot vintage brings more fruit weight for sure, but the wine remains fresh and well balanced overall.

The 2022 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is coming to market in March 2025, but the 2022 Masseto will not be released until September 2025. Today, Ornellaia counts 134 hectares of vines, including 11 hectares in Castagneto Carducci (with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Vermentino) that were added in 2022. Masseto covers 11 hectares of vines surrounded by forests. I tasted these wines with proprietor Lamberto Frescobaldi at the estate. We were joined by the new Director of Production Marco Balsimelli, who worked in Bordeaux at the Laboratoire Oenologique Boissenot for 18 years before returning to his native Italy. The 2022 Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is everything a second wine should be. Open-knit and racy, the 2022 caresses the palate with succulent red fruit. Floral and spice notes with a kick of blood orange open the wine nicely on the mid-palate and into the finish. Soft, silky tannins wrap it all together. Vineyard Cultivation

Ornellaia's vineyards occupy a 57-hectare estate in Bolgheri on Tuscany's Tuscan Coast, benefiting from the region's continental climate moderated by sea breezes. The property sits on gravelly, clay-rich soils with moderate water-holding capacity, characteristic of this prestigious terroir. Le Serre Nuove vines are cultivated using sustainable practices with careful canopy management to achieve optimal ripeness. The 2022 vintage saw moderate temperatures and adequate rainfall during the growing season, producing good balance in phenolic ripeness without excessive sugar accumulation.

Vinification

Grapes from select parcels are hand-harvested and carefully sorted before destemming. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel and wooden vats, with extended maceration to extract colour and tannin structure. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in French oak barriques, where it ages for 12 to 14 months. The blend typically comprises Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, selected to express secondary fruit character alongside primary structure. The finished wine shows Ornellaia's hallmark elegance rather than excessive extraction.

Tenuta dell’Ornellaia is located in one of the world’s most exciting wine regions: Bolgheri. A breathtaking avenue lined by towering cypress trees leads inland from the Aurelia, the old Roman coastal road, up to the walls of Bolgheri’s medieval hamlet. From the village the view extends far out to sea and on a clear day the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago and Corsica can be seen.

The mild maritime climate and the lush Mediterranean vegetation leave an imprint upon the character of the wines. Tenuta dell’Ornellaia's unique territory guides all aspects of production: limited quantities to ensure maximum quality, attention to every detail, selective hand harvesting, microvinification and ageing. Ornellaia is a Cabernet/Merlot wine blend. Masseto is made entirely from Merlot - it is a model of rich, silky elegance and has rapidly become a modern classic.
