Made with fruit from Cannubi Boschis, the Luciano Sandrone 2018 Barolo Aleste is plump and ripe, but this wine also shows a more delicate character that is its ace card. The aromas are filigreed and fine with dark fruit, spice and licorice. The effect is integrated, and the wine shows a lovely, softer personality to balance out this mildly concentrated expression.

Dried red berries and dried flowers, almost tobacco on the nose. Citrus and minty notes add character. Medium-to full-bodied, elegant and silky palate that thickens out with fine, creamy tannins as it progresses. Super texture to this, gently coating the palate. Rather firmer just at the end for now. Really refined and elegant.

The 2018 Barolo Aleste is gorgeous, but also very quite today. There's terrific purity to the dark red/purplish fruit and a good bit of volume too, but readers will have to be patient. Bright acids and firm tannins lend energy. I admire the presence and texture here. The Aleste, from Cannubi Boschis, benefits from a site that can handle moisture. This is nicely done.

Vineyard Cultivation

Luciano Sandrone's Aleste vineyard comprises parcels in Barolo DOCG, planted to Nebbiolo in the heart of Piedmont's most prestigious terrain. Sandrone is known for meticulous site selection and conservative yields—typically 40–50 hectolitres per hectare—to concentrate fruit expression. The vineyard sits on south-facing slopes with calcareous clay and silty soils that impart the structure and mineral tension Barolo demands. The 2018 vintage occurred amid a challenging growing season marked by spring frosts and late-season cool weather; Sandrone selectively harvested only fully-ripened fruit to ensure phenolic maturity despite the vintage's difficulties.

Vinification

Sandrone's traditional Barolo methodology begins with extended pre-fermentation maceration, softening the Nebbiolo's austere tannins whilst extracting colour. Fermentation proceeded in large wooden or concrete vessels with wild yeasts, uncontrolled temperature, over three to four weeks—a slow, deliberate process he considers essential to Barolo complexity. Post-fermentation, the wine underwent extended ageing in large Slavonian oak casks (typically 30–50 hectolitres) for two to three years, permitting slow oxidative maturation and tannin evolution without new-oak influence that would overwhelm Nebbiolo's delicate aromatics.

About this Wine

Piedmont

Piedmont (Piemonte in Italian) is probably the finest wine region in all of Italy, and has laid claim to this since Roman times. It has a continental climate influenced by the surrounding Alps and Ligurian Apennines, and is located in the north-west of Italy, bordering both France and Switzerland.

Piedmont has only 1% of the total vineyards of Bordeaux and 15% that of Burgundy. So while a top Chateaux may produce upwards of 35,000 cases a year, leading Barolo producers will often make only 800 cases. More than half of its vineyards are registered with DOC designations and many are in the Apennine or Alpine foothills, from 300-600m above sea level. Most of the wines are produced by smaller family estates rather than larger holdings.

Piedmont has 46 different DOC and four DOCG regions, and produces the largest number of well known, world-recognized, prize-winning wines. The most famous would have to be Barolo or Barbaresco, whose power comes from the Nebbiolo grape variety. The most widely planted red variety is Barbera although Dolcetto, Muscat, Shiraz and Bonarda are also produced.

The white variety most well known is Moscato, which is often made into frizzante (bubbly) wines known as Asti. Cortese is made into the popular Gavi wines, and smaller amounts of Chardonnay and high quality Sparkling are also produced in the far north of Piedmont.
